alright here's the answers in the order you asked them:

-1x stands for 1xRTT...its a high speed data network and is the type of coverage your phone has a the current time(other icons you may notice are D for digital, and A for analog coverage)

-This is because you have the service change option on, to turn it on or off press menu>8>1>4>1 ... this makes the phone beep and show "changing service area" on the display when you enter or change service areas.

-There is a cable available from radio shack, i'm not sure of the model number though try the search feature to locate it.

-Its a very capable phone, some of the coolest things are Get It Now (as you seem to have figured out already [IMG]) chaning the color of the external LCD, changing themes, built in organizer and tip calculator. Myself and (i'm sure) others have noticed the "GPS" logo on the back of the phone and have tried to figure out a way to use it to show coordinates but have so far been unsuccessful. We are sure however a GPS chip (gpsOne) in the phone that is used for E911 services in some areas.

-I do not believe that there is a way to use it as a speakerphone w/o a car kit, it would be a welcome addition though.

Hope that helps and welcome to the forums!
