you might wanto research into what technology and frequencys italy uses. are you going to be there for awhile? your best bet might be to bite the bullet and buy a phone there. more than likely your sprint phone will not work at all as most of Europe is GSM and not CDMA like your sprint devices.

A GSM phone with the 900 and 1800 MHz bands will suffice for Europe. It should be SIM unlocked, able to work with any service provider's SIM.

A good used phone might a Nokia 6150, if you should find one.

The only three Sprint world phone I know of are the Samsung A790 & i830w, and the Blackberry 8830. You would be better off buying a 900/1800 GSM phone off eBay and buying a prepaid SIM once you are in Italy. Your rates will be much cheaper. :)

I agree. Getting a cheap quadband GSM phone with an Italian prepaid SIM is best. I don't think an American CDMA phone will work in Italy.

I know sprints "garden variety" phones wont work there, but they do have some phones that are cdma AND gsm. LIke the ones that were mentioned above. I look into the prepaid italian one, though my original plan was to buy a sprint world phone from ebay, transfer my account to it, go to italy, come back, put my account back on my other phone, and then REsell the world phone on ebay, so in effect the phone wouldnt cost me anything.

Instead of doing all that why not just get a quadband GSM phone if you don't plan on keeping it? That would be easier and cheaper.

I second the suggestion to buy a cheap handset in Italy and use an Italian SIM card. A cheap GSM handset can probably be had for around 20-50 euros and may very well include a SIM card and some airtime.

Just like here in the US you can buy a cheap prepaid cell phone for $20-$30, and a block of minutes for as low as $10.

...just buy a cheap unbranded/unlocked quad-band GSM phone and be done with it.
