I am currently using Verizon Wireless National Access for my internet connection when traveling, and I have Alltel DSL/using alltel email address/ when at home. I cannot access any Alltel website that has www.alltel.com or alltel.mail.net, etc. in order to get to email while on the road using my National Access card. I have also tried to set up access thru Alltel:incoming & Verizon: outgoing thru Outlook which also does not work.

Has anyone had this problem with the National Access plan not connecting to specific websites? Any ideas as to what I can do to make this Verizon card work with my email? Or better to just cancel my National Access service? Wondering if competative phone companies block access to site...anyone know?

Thanks, any help would be much appreciated.

I assume you can access other Web sites, but can you confirm? Also, do you have any other e-mail accounts you can use to test the card?

Yes, I can access any website including other phone companies that I would see as competitors to Verizon.....so far, just anything alltel will not connect on this card. Makes me think that Alltel is the culprit in blocking the connection. Currently I do not have an email account other than on alltel that I could test... would a hotmail account work as a test?
    Many thanks,
    Susie

Have you contacted Alltel tech support to see if they are blocking access from verizon.com? I just connected to www.alltel.com, but that was from my cable modem via Earthlink. I can try that site from my Verizon cell and get back to you later.

The basic hotmail account would only be another web site. However, if hotmail can be set up for POP3 access, and I think it can, then that would make a good test.

    Let me test www.alltel.com

Thanks for testing on your Verizon cell, I have not contacted an Alltel tech yet but will do that shortly. I can connect to alltel.net or alltel.com or mail.alltel.net on any connection, including dialup, except for the Verizon card. I recently upgraded to a new laptop, but the results with the Verizon card is the same, no email!!

Well, I was able to connect to www.alltel.com while using verizon.com as my ISP but my connection is not tha same as yours.

I don't have National Access. I just use my StarTac CDMA phone as a dial-up modem for my laptop. Normally I call my own ISP, but this time I used verizon.com by setting the DUN to dial #777 on my StarTac and using qnc for both username and password. After connecting I went to www.alltel.com and the page did load, though very slowly since the StarTac does dial-up networking at only about 9600 Baud :p But at least there is no additional charge other than my minutes. (How long will this last?)

    Susie,
Call VZW tech support too and see if they can duplicate the problem with their National Access Cards. I can promise you that Verizon is not blocking any site on purpose, even ALLTEL's. ;)

Susie--I had this same problem and after hours of searching I found the answer. You need to disable Venturi. Click on Tools/Preferences in your VZAccess Manager, click on the Venturi tab, and unclick the compress and accelerate box. Voila, you can get to the Alltel site and get your email. If you want to send mail using Outlook, it's another issue. I'm researching this now, but check out this link

    http://dts.vzw.com/faqs/VZAccess/pc_card.html#item13

It explains how to use Verizon's workaround to get your email to send from Outlook.

You can send and receive email via Alltel's website, which I'm sure you know:

    http://mail.alltel.net/

    Cheers

It is quite common for ISPs to require that if you use a regular e-mail program that all e-mail be sent through their own SMTP server.

One way to work around the need for a second Outlook profile is to determine if your ISP has so-called SMTP Relay service. This always requires username/password authentication. If they do have an SMTP relay, you can use one Outlook setup to send e-mail from any ISP. The only remaining problem is that some ISP's will block Port 25, which is the port normally used for outgoing SMTP traffic. The workaround for this problem is to see if your ISP has set up an alternate SMTP port. Mine uses Port 2525 but other ISPs use a different non-standard port. The SMTP relay and SMTP Port info should be on your ISP's Support page.

I have Outlook set up to use my ISP's SMTP relay and also to use their alternate SMTP port, Port 2525, and I can use Outlook to send e-mail from any ISP that I happen to be connected to: hotels, other businesses, my cell phone, etc.

Those are good suggestions so I dug through Alltel's info at www.alltel.net in their users FAQs and anywhere else I could find but there was no information on this whatsoever. Their site is really extremely simplisitic and of little use. I also googled Alltel with SMTP Relay service and Alltel with alternate SMTP port and came up empty. Probably time to call Alltel, but I'm betting they'll not have a clue. I've since found that a pay service like SMTP.com will work, but I thought I'd post here and maybe someone will know if Alltel has an SMTP Relay service and an alternate SMTP port for this situation.

Here is my issue. Recently aquired the Verizon Wireless aircard. Now ALL the email worked prior to putting this card and software into the laptop. Venturi has been disabled, can receive email just fine. Email account is MSN which is web-based to begin with. Also, there is a second email account with Hotmail (again one in the same here)

When sending an email from MSN it seems to send just fine, then 20 minutes later there is a "delay" email sent from postmaster general, a few hours later another email comes in saying unable to deliver.

Today I spoke with VZ tech support for this card and about shot through the roof at the lady on the phone. VZ Aircard blocks A LOT of websites. She told me the ONLY way to get any type of incoming email on that aircard is to set up some sort of POP3 account (she mentioned AOL, Yahoo, or Comcast) and then let them use their SMTP server to bring the email in.

My deal is this, it's a web-based email service (MSN) that doesn't use POP3 and doesn't need to run through an SMTP service. Really do not want to use Outlook at all. Would much rather keep the webmail service.

Any suggestions on fixing this issue with the quickness??? There has got to be a loophole someplace....

Here's my bottom line first, and then the details. You are correct about the Web-based services, and no, I don't know how to fix your speed problem.

First of all, even if there are issues connecting to some web sites, if you can log in to that site then your system is compatable. (Of course there still could be problems rendering any specific page on that site, but those would be the same whether were using a hardwired connection or wireless connection.) If you cannot send e-mail from a particular web-based e-mail service once you have successfully logged in, then I don't see how this can be caused by anything on your computer. Do you have this problem with all mail sent from MSN? Have you tried it again? I know that my hosting company as being hit by DOS attackes on Friday and my e-mail was very slow.

When you say that "all mail worked prior to installing the card and its software" how were you connected? I assume via a hardwire connection - or perhaps another wireless card? I'm also going to assume that by Venturi you mean the Venturi Wireless application that is licensed to Verizon that allows faster speeds. If Venturi is really disabled, and not just not available in your area, then THAT is a hardware/software conflict or setup issue between that program, the wireless card and your laptop. It has nothing to do with specific web sites. I don't used any wireless data card, so somone else will have to help you out with the Venturi problem.

    Hi,
I have experienced a similar problem. I am using a Verizon KPC650 card and VZAccess. Verizon support told me to download Venturi version 3.1.4, but I already had it. My problem shows up if I try to send a message to someone with an AOL address from my MSN email account. Sometimes I can send a message from my verizon accout successfully. It sound like the only thing that works is to turn off Venturi when I send to an AOL account. It will be interesting to see if anyone comes up with a better solution.

Since I never received a response to the comments I made in January, let me ask you for clarification.

Isn't MSN a web-based mail system? If you can connect to the MSN Web-based mail page with your Verizon card, compose an e-mail to someone at AOL and send it, how is Verizon or Venturi involved in this issue? Since you are using MSN's Web-based mail system, this e-mail is coming directly from MSN. Verizon is not involved in any way once the characters have been transmitted to MSN's web mail site, which happens before the message is sent. If I'm wrong about MSN being only Web-based please correct me.
