Hey everyone. I am a student currently studying Network Engineering. As soon as I finish school I want to start a cell phone business. I am planning on implementing GSM/GPRS, 3G, and EDGE into my service. But I need help figuring out what equipment and stuff I need. Can anyone point me to a website or maybe some book where I can learn more about this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

You want to start your own network? Or start a cell phone retail store?

A tad late to be trying to start a cell phone company. Unless you've got literally 100 million dollars in cash (Be it you, or an investment group) you're not going to be starting your own network anytime soon. The licenses alone will eat up most, if not all of that initial 100 million dollar investment.

well my network won't be that big at first. It will only cover a few cities at first. Plus I'm not starting one in the US. It's going to be in Canada where we need another company.

Average cell site costs $500k, USD to build. That's not including monthly costs like the lease, power and backhaul costs.

Contact Industry Canada and ask about their upcoming spectrum auctions. Before you can do anything you have to have a frequency license and they're the ones that control those.

There's no how-to guide in how to build your own cellular network. If you truly have access to the money to invest, you'll know how to get a hold of the proper consultants and companies.

funding isn't going to be a problem. The network that I am starting up is with help of few other North American big Cell phone operator companies :browani: Also I have one more quick question. Whats the range of one cell phone tower. Is it 150KM radius???

If that's the case, why are you asking for help on an internet forum? Your partners are well experienced in the process.

The effective radius of a tower is directly lated to the needs of the area it's serving. We'll say a tower can be effective from 1/2 mile to 25 miles, depending on it's design but no further.

Get some books on the technology you're interested in deploying, and get educated in business practices.

An MBA (Or equivalent knowledge) will take you farther in starting a cellular company than anything else. You'll be paying people to do the actual network design.
