My family and I are going to get it soon. Our desktop is almost four years old and the space is maxed out (400 MB left). We will be getting a new desktop (tower, mouse, and keyboard only) soon and it will have Windows Vista on it. I will then upgrade my laptop that I am currently typing on to Vista.
Ugh... Windows Vista is nothing but a Mac OS X clone that is coming out two years later after Apple launched it's OS. Once again Microsoft copies someone else instead of coming up with their own ideas.
I beg to differ -- the built-in computer decelerator is their own patented design It may've taken them two years to implement it, but I'm sure it's future-proof for at least another year or two!
If you read online reviews you will find that Vista copied many features and looks from Mac OS X. From what I've saw I'm not impressed with Vista and most of the "new" features can be found in Apple's current OS that has been out for years.
I was being very sarcastic -- I've only seen one of the RC builds, but it was slow like you won't believe it -- OS X is a speedy bullet next to it.
Wirelessly posted (Walkguru's: LG-CU500 Obigo/WAP2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0) Im in no hurry to get it.
When I ran the upgrade advisor it had a long list of programs that may not work on Vista. So I think I will wait for a while before upgrading.
My comp which I bought on New Year's Eve came with a "rebate" which basically is Windows Vista, I wasn't sure if I should get it or not... ~*Ash*~
I think Apple freaks (and yes, I'd rather I had a Mac) are too nuts about this whole "Windows copied us" thing. First, OS X is nothing more than sexy Linux right? Linux is open source...so Apple went and made it proprietary if I understand correctly. Secondly, as was told to me by a prof I had in college, sometime way back in the 1980's Apple (Steve Jobs?) allowed MS to "copy" their icon based OS. Since then MS has been continuing to copy it, sorta under the terms of this now 20+ year old agreement. So if that is true, Apple fans can thank none other than their own for the reasons MS "copies" the various Mac OS's.
I read that Apple is suggesting iTunes users hold off on purchasing Vista because there are quite a few conflicts that haven't been patched yet... So that in itself would be enough for me to hold off... ~*Ash*~
Of course Apple is going to try and do this. If it scares one person into buying a MAC then they've done their job. That's one reason why I absolutely refuse to own any Apple product. -Jay
Vista is actually not fully compatible yet with some hardware and software. Apple did NOT puropusely make iTunes have issues with Windows Vista. I'm so unimpressed with Vista. It took Microsoft five years to create this OS and all they did was copy the Mac OS and release a half assed "pretty" version of Windows. Vista still has some hardware and software conflicts and I think Microsoft released the OS entirely too early. Microsoft should have worked these issues out but they knew the Windows world was craving an update so they just released a mostly finished but not quite product to the market in order to get it on shelves.

Ah iTunes. If there is one place where MS beats Apple, it is in the media player department. WMP is much better than iTunes IMO.
Actually, OS X is sexy BSD and Mach, but the idea is right, these are both open source. The sexy part is proprietary and it's the implementation of the Cocoa API, the Quartz graphics layer and the Aqua UI. Apple invested a lot in these and they deserve to make money from them. Yes, Apple licensed parts of the original Mac UI to Microsoft for use in Windows 1.0. Apple later sued MS, saying essentially that the terms of the original license were limited and didn't cover the additional copying that MS did in Windows 2.0 and 3.0. Apple eventually lost after being countersued by Xerox (an interesting story in itself) and spending millions of dollars. I'm not sure if any of this applies to the OS X UI, but Apple and MS kissed and made up a long time ago, so there won't be any more suing, just nasty cracks in TV ads. SW
I didn't mean to imply that Apple doesn't deserve to make money off of their developments, just that they are in it for money just like MS. Apple just does a much better job of not screwing up.
Agreed. And one reason the Apple vs MS lawsuit was so ridiculous is that Apple copied a lot of the original Mac UI from Xerox. This story has been told many times in books about both companies, but basically what we know of as the windows and mouse UI was invented at SRI and Xerox PARC in the 1960s and 1970s. Neither organization really commercialized these inventions and it was left to Apple to bring the graphical UI to the mass market after, famously, Steve Jobs was given a tour of Xerox PARC in 1979. I bought a HP notebook on monday with Vista Premium built in. So far it is working good. I like the way it looks. It has not crashed yet but I'm sure it will someday!!
I purchased a compaq Presario C300 around the holidays and it came with the vista upgrade "rebate" on the reciept. I sent for it a few weeks ago but I probably will not install it right away when it comes. Ive grown accustomed to windows XP and quite a few programs I use (iTunes included, but also an application that my bank uses to disguise my credit card number when shopping online, called 'virtual account numbers') do not work on vista yet.
you mean wait to buy one preloaded with vista on it? that would be a great excuse to run out and buy a new computer right now . lol
I put a post on my blog a little bit ago with a link to an article pitting Vista againts Linux Ubunutu. The article is a good read and confirmed what I had been thinking all along. That Vista just wasn't going to be worth the money for me. At least, not anytime soon. I've been playing with Linux and Mac OS X for a while now, but its just so hard to make that complete transition. I've been using Windows for so long... its just what is most comfortable. Ubuntu is really nice and may pull me on over though. I'll just have to wait and see I guess.
