I am thinking about buying a Motorola V710 from Ebay and can only find phones that will work with Verizon. I was wondering if it could be converted to work with US Cellular. Should I look for an "unlocked" phone or can I buy a phone branded for Verizon and unlock it myself to work with US Cellular  ?

    Yes and no.

I would go into a huge discussion to answer this question in detail but I don't have the time so I'll just give you the conclusion.

Yes, technically you can have the software wiped off the phone and have it reinstalled with USCC's. It's not a wise move because it is an extremely difficult process that cannot be done by the average joe and there is always the probability of ruining the phone.

Just keep an eye out on ebay for a USCC phone...

USCC will no longer active non-USCC-branded equipment. :(

Pretty much the only major CDMA carrier these days that will activate "anything" is Alltel...and I suspect they'll start following everyone else soon.

Vzw used to, but if I recall correctly they've pretty much stopped doing that as well.
