does anyone have a feeling for when the industry will reach the digital rollout point to where it no longer makes sense to maintain AMPS analog systems? Or is AMPS here to stay?

I think I read somewhere the FCC is mandating carriers support AMPS for at least the next 15 years.

All OnStar equiped vehicles use 3 watt AMPS transceivers to communicate.

I believe UPS and FedEx also use AMPS to send package data.

AMPS is the "GSM" of North America. Meaning it is the only standard that is available everywhere in North America, like GSM is available everywhere in Europe.

Yes...AMPS will be around a bit longer..................though we are trying to get rid of it. FCC is making it stay around for a while.........but the Towers will have a digital as well as AMPS together. So the people with digital phones will be able to use the benifits of digital and the people with analog.............well can still have crappy service
