i'll explain this the best i can, wife has iphone 3g,
    it's 4mo's old,not mistreated,nor dropped, the problem
is when she turns the phone to vib.only and she gets
a call the screen lights up and the phone viberates
(fine if your watching the phone) now if she turns
the switch back to ring all call's go straight to voicemail,
turns switch back to vib.and the phone viberates and call
come's though,we are over 250 miles from the iphone store
if anyone came help safe us the trip it would be great.

I can't see how the two are related since the switch only turns the ringer off. Since it seems like a new problem, are you certain that the ringer volume is not turned off or down very low?

The side rocker volume switch performs two separate functions: When in a call, it adjusts the headset/speaker volume. When not in a call, and the phone unlocked, it adjusts the ringer volume. Normally I would have the ringer volume 3/4 full on. Check that first.

Also, when a call comes in, and you press the ringer rocker switch once, it will dismiss the call to voicemail.

That is the only thing that i can see. You don't have to drive to the Apple store; Apple.com also provides 1 year of telephone help too.

    Good luck.

the vol.is all the way up,but as soon as she turns from
vib.to ring, the phone call goes straight to voice mail,i guess
she just have to call apple,it will be a shame if she has to
get a refurb phone this early. one good thing i guess is
she can't blame me for this one,i told her not to buy this thing.

You didn't really say if this was a new problem or not.

You can also go to a nearby ATT store. Calls going straight to voicemail seems more a problem for ATT than Apple. Your problem seems very strange indeed, if it is just a manner if the phone is in vibrate mode or ring mode.

You mean that the phone never worked in ring mode?
Or do you mean that it used to work fine, but now it does not?

And it doesn't even flash, or display that a call is coming in (when in ring mode)?

well she called apple, apple told her to do a couple
of things that didn't work, they put her on hold about 10min
while they called att, her phone turned itshelf off then back on
again, problem fixed, apple said att had to send the phone an update.
it still doesn't make any since to me.but at least it works now.

One thing you can try in future is a full reboot the phone (not a master clear reset). You press the power and home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo. It may take a few minutes for the phone to power back on again, but it may help resolve some issues. This is similar to the iPod reset process.

One more thing, if you leave the phone on 24/7, you might want to power it down and turn it on again. Sometimes leaving it on all the time can cause a few quirks.

    Just a few suggestions. :)

Good that a phone call saved you a long drive.

My iPhone has been trouble free. There are 3 of them in our family going on 2 years now. Best phone that I ever owned over the last 15 years.
