I bet you love your Wi-Fi. Well, don't get too attached. Ericsson's chief marketing officer believes that Wi-Fi is already irrelevant and will be replaced by high-speed wireless broadband sooner than we think. Roadblocks are definitely in the way, but 3.5G networks will far outstrip Wi-Fi in coverage the world over. Wi-Fi Hotspots Are Doomed - Mobile Blog - InformationWeek
wi-fi in the house wont be replaced...i dont see that as possible...and people will continue to have routers and dsl/cable bc for multi users it trumps wireless service...for now at least.
The Ericsson guy was talking about public hotspots going the way of public phonebooths. Home WiFi is not going anywhere anytime soon. On the contrary, home networks are on the rise. But public hotspots could be on the way down. As 3G and 4G data rates increase and operators price it cheaper, it will just be more convienient to stay on your HSPA or LTE connection rather than disconnecting and logging into a coffee shop WiFi network.
For profit Hot Spots may close but I can't see the many free Hot Spots closing. Also WiFi at business and educational institutions, like universities would likely not be shut down regardless of what comes.
Not closing, but declining. It's 2008 and phone booths still exist. But since cell phones became popular the last 10 years, phone booths have rapidly declined in popularity because most people have cell phones and it's just easier to call with them instead. Same for public WiFi hotspots, they will always be there but just used less and less as more people will find it more convienient to connect using HSPA/LTE instead. WiFi at home and business is a different story, that is definitely growing. Nobody said WiFi as whole is "doomed" except the bloggers and jornalists who want to write a story with a grabbing headline.
The demise of WiFi sounds like the cellular carriers' dream. Free WiFi is FREE. Subscription WiFi might be going away, but not free WiFi. It is cheaper to use your wireless broadband connection rather than paying for TMo, A&T and Biongo. However, I frequent airports and establishments that have free WiFi as opposed to subscription WiFi. Ericsson's CMO needs to understand that nothing is cheaper than free WiFi and it is not likely to go anywhere..
I hope every carrier will add in Home Hotspot service, like TMobile. Great for people that live or work in coverage holes.
