I started back in December of 97 with Sprint PCS. It was not to long after they started here in the Minneapolis area, and the coverage was really small. I had that Sony with the slide up ear piece ( don't remember the model # ). The whole reason I got it was that I figured I was paying $15 a month for a pager, so why not pay $15 more per month and actually have a phone. $30 per month, 180 minutes, first incoming minute free, and then later on they came out with 500 N&W (7pm to 7am) for $10 extra (thought I was living large at that point :browani: ). A year later got a Sanyo 3000 for analog capability, then another year later the Nokia 6185. Had that for 2 more years and then went to Verizon about 2 and a half years ago.

    GTE Mobilnet then VerizonWireless
I'm not home to look it up but either in 1987 or 88 I had a Motorola Bag Phone, wired to external antenna on the car. GTE Mobilnet had a plan....$75 for 20 anytime minutes, no weekend minutes were available until about 2 years later then an extra $15/month for 'free weekends' from 6p Fri until 6A Mon. I think when the weekend minutes became available the $75 plan increased the anytime minutes to 30 minutes. I remember the heavy battery would hold a charge on the weekend to make a 35 minute call and then have to be recharged. Oh yeah thinking about the free weekends....that wasn't free weekends to anywhere in the US just Texas. Roaming outside of Texas when we traveled was $0.99/minute. My wife and I used it regularly to talk to relatives located all over Texas. I bought a AC/DC converter to use it in the house on the weekends. The rates really started coming down I noticed after about 3 or 4 years maybe around '90 or '91 or maybe when Verizon came into the picture. Yeah maybe that was the reason, when did the merger take place? Anyone know for sure? Sure was good to get rid of that monster 3 watter for the less range portables. Good to be able to carry in the pocket or purse rather than like a suitcase, ha!!! Yes, been with the same company for all this time, except for the merge and have no complaints whatsoever. They even upgraded me to a higher priced National One Rate plan over the America's Choice when roaming happened in Hammond Louisiana for 6 months in a row and I threatened to switch carriers. Paying exactly the same for the National One Rate plans for my wife's and my phone as I was for the America's Choice plan. So quite naturally I'm a happy camper with Verizon. They value their customers that stick with them. Any questions? Mike

Wow! Someone else who used Sprint Cellular.

My first cell phone personally was the Ericsson T18z with BellSouth Mobility DCS. Service went to absolute crap in every possible way the moment my alpha tag changed to Cingular. First, the T18z died, so I got a new Cingular-branded Nokia 3390. It worked well for a while. Then the signal went down...and down...and down....and I got fed up with the company cutting off my phone because my payment was a day late which was their fault anyway for not giving me even a day of turnaround time to pay the thing.

So, that's my history. Here's my family's history:

Motorola bagphone - Centel Cellular, then Sprint Cellular
Motorola DPC-550 (the original flip, and the DPC-450 or something, the same phone with no flip) - Sprint Cellular, then 360 Communications
The old Nokia CDMA bar - 360 Communications, then Alltel
Qualcomm slimphone - 360 Communications, then Alltel
Motorola StarTAC 7868W - Verizon Wireless
    LG VX4400B - Verizon Wireless
    LG VX4500 - Verizon Wireless
    Audiovox CDM-8600 - Verizon Wireless

    Our current phones:
Motorola StarTAC 7868W - Verizon Wireless
    LG VX4400B - Verizon Wireless
    Audiovox CDM-8600 - Verizon Wireless

Come on Yello, we all know crack dealers don't use cell phones, they still use pagers!

I got my first phone in like 96-97. I think it was a Mitsubishi with Bellsouth. I got it because my girlfriend started going to school out of town so with the free long distance I had to get it.

Ya know....I think I got mine in 1994 too....I got it where I worked at the time (Service Merchandise) I also remember I wasn't quite 18 yet, so I had to get it activated in my mom's name......BTW, is that still a rule? Back in those days you couldn't activate unless you were 18....they wouldn't allow you.

My mom had a car phone in her previous minivan long ago. We bought the van in '92, so no earlier than that. My dad got a bag phone. I don't even remember which service they used.

I got my first phone, Kyo2235, in Dec 2002 during junior year of college. I got married 6 months later, but stayed on my parents' plan for another year. Then I broke off and got my wife a phone (now that we can afford it).

I still have one friend who refuses to get a cell. It makes him hard to track down between work, home (sister's), home (parents'), and school (he's graduated, but hangs out with friends).

I know this thread is old, but here it goes.

I Got my first phone in May 1997 with Airtouch Cellular or Iowa, Nokia 252 I don't think it was 232. Then a Airtouch pager beacuse I was tired of roaming in the Imperial Valley, CA (today you don't roam). Then in 2000 back with Airtouch Cellular got Nokia 252 ("This was not the same phone as the first one"). Then in the fall went to US Cellular got a Nokia TDMA. Then in fall 2001 got Motorola V120c, then fall 2002 Timeport 270c. Tried Audiovox 8900 a few days.

Not a peanut Moto! My wife had one in college. The rubber "skins" never seemed to stay on. I think they expanded when warm.

I took mine off and got a cheap, hard, gloss-black cover. It was pretty sweet-looking, actually, until it started to crack because it was non-OEM. Probably the most comfortable handset I've ever owned. It reached my ear and mouth, which is rare for a non-clamshell handset and it felt good in my hand. Oh well, that handset got tanked in a pint of beer anyway.
Here's to ya, Moto v2397!
