Hi All, I'm designing a few web sites in my (very little) free time. To better help my decide on the layout (ie: width of the page in pixels), I'm trying to figure out what is the most common monitor resolution size. Most of the computers I use I have the resoultion set to 1024x768, but maybe I should design the page considering people are still using 800x600 settings? (Either old and small monitors, or people with bad eyesight). I see this site (wirelessadvisor) is aimed at a 1024x768 size. But Phonescoop is very narrow and considers 800x600 users. Anyway, please help me out and give me your feedback. If you use several monitors, then just select the one you use the most. Thanks! PS-If you don't know where to look in Windows: Right click on the Desktop and select "Properties", then "Settings"
Well I don't see my resolution listed, but my current resolution is 1440 X 900 pixels on a 17" widescreen Toshiba laptop.
ooops. i guess i didn't list all possible resolutions. i'm mainly interested in the width, so just select the closest width to what you have. so in your case, select 1280x1024. thanks!
I use 1024x768 at home because I have a huge 21" monitor and bad eyes. I can't read the screen at higher resolutions without lots of squinting. At work the computers are set at 800x600 because that's what our software package was designed to run at. If you run a higher resolution the screen is impossible to read. -Jay

Does a laptop screen count? If so, there's no option for me too choose because my screen resolution is bigger than any of the numbers listed. MIne is 1920 x 1200 Widescreen, with 32 bit color quality. This is the default screen resolution and using anything smaller looks weird on this thing.
Two suggestions: - You don't want to force the user to have their browser in full-screen mode to see all of your information. Many people are used to doing a number of things at once on high resolution monitors, resulting in a number of overlapping windows. This means that even if you find that most people are using resolutions of 1024x768 or even greater, there is no requirement to use as many of those pixels as you can. It may be a bit friendlier to pick something between 800x600 and 1024x768. - Many people are using 4:3 and widescreen monitors of 20" and greater, and widescreen laptops of around 17". Almost all of these displays have more pixels than the biggest numbers on your poll. A bunch of the email responses reflect this. So you may want to revise the poll to include more resolutions or simply a "greater than" choice. My 20" Apple Cinema Display has a native 1680x1050 pixels. I just bought my nephew a 17" Toshiba laptop for college that is also 1680x1050. SW
1440 X 900 on my 19" desktop LCD and 1200 X 800 on my 15.4" notebook. Widescreen is the only way to go.
Thanks to everyone for their replies keep 'em coming. SteveW: thanks for the advice. I think you're right about aiming it between 800 - 1024. I think I'll shoot for about 950 or so. 800 just looks too skimpy in full screen on a 1024. I'd revise the poll, but I'm too lazy :O So just select the closest choice. And posting your actual resolution and monitor details is anyway interesting to read.
I added 1600x1200 to the poll. Some of us have professional gear. I'm running 1600x1200 on a 21" LCD monitor. I can't stand working on anything less than that. My phone, however, runs at 320x240
Thanks, Bobo! Even though I run @1600x1200, my monitors are far cry from professional gear, but at least I can participate in the poll now
I've got a 24" LCD running at 1900x1200, 17" LCD running at 1280x768. My 15.4" Laptop runs at 1280x800.
