Today was heavy snow, we got 6", and then it turned to freezing rain, than a steady cold rain. So for you guys who like the cold. come to MA. By the time I got done with my trash route, I could not feel my fingers. Oh, how long for the dog days of Summer!
As much as I like the cold, I don't know how long I'd last on the East Coast with the kind of cold you get. I'm a Californian-ized weather-wimp. I've never been in really dangerous weather like blizzards, below zero windchill, severe thunderstorms and the like. When we have rare severe weather here, it throws me for a loop, as I'm just not used to it. We have the mildest weather in the country. The worst thing we get is desert heat (110 degree and above temps), that's it. Thunderstorms are rare and severe t-storms are even rarer. Most Santa Ana winds are normal, but there are occasional severe ones. The last extreme Santa Ana I experienced was in the Pasadena/San Gabriel Valley area in 1997, when the Santa Anas blew out of control with brief gusts reaching 125 mph. That scared the crap out of me. It's the worst SoCal weather event I've ever been through. That tells you how rare extreme/severe weather is here. :O
I hope I did not come across as picking on you Mike or all you guys out West, I was not.I like the friendly banter back and forth with our weather. I am sure there are days you wish you had our weather, when the temps are hot enough to bake a chicken. And when I am freezing my behind off,I think about how nice it would be, to be hanging in California basking in the warmth and sunshine.
Well it is interesting to experience different weather conditions. I have been in blizzards, ice storms (with 1 inch of ice), below zero windchill (actual temperature was -20 with a windchill close to -70), heat events (110 temperature with 116 heat index), heavy wind events (hurricanes/severe storms/5 miles from a Tornado), severe thunderstorms (that had a Tornado Warning issued), flood events, tropical storms, and hurricanes. I love extreme weather. I prefer to watch it on TV than actually be in it.
No worries Joe, never thought you were picking on me. In truth, I am a weather wimp. Loud thunder makes me nervous after awhile since we have it so rarely. We don't get severe weather much at all. We get weather before it hits the mountains, strengthens, then slams the central and eastern part of the country. I don't know how I'd do living with snow on a regular basis, let alone trying to drive in it... :notworthy Props to you East Coasters who are used to this stuff!
Storm two of three is heading our way tonight and into tomorrow. Supposedly it's going to be a "warmer" storm. Maybe so, but it's still in the low 50s here at the moment. Storm three arrives Saturday sometime.
Storm three is here. It's been raining pretty steady for several hours now. Boy has this been a wet week. I'm beginning to miss the Sun. We need this rain, so I'm not complaining, but it will be nice to see the Sun again when these storms are over.
The sun is out! The sun is out! I'd almost forgotten what you looked like... Clouds and sun, temp about 61 degrees.
After last week's visit to the refrigerator, we are now shifting appliances to the stove again for a little warm-up...It's supposed to be 71 today, and by the end of the week, 80 degrees!?! That's a Southern California late Fall/Winter for you...:googlyeye
55Âş here today (sunny) and 28Âş tonight (clear). Hoping for a good weekend, as I'll be on an Amtrak train from Charlotte to New York City this Sunday ($94 each way). I won't be back till at least January 6th, I'll be in NJ for almost 3 weeks, so I hope the weather turns out good for the holidays.
I am moving!!!! It is still cold here, 16 degrees and sunny but cold! Who needs to caffeine to wake up in the morning? Just stand on the back of a trash truck for 5 hours with a a wind chill of -20, that will wake you up no problem!
California awaits! It's 75 degrees and partly cloudy now. It supposed to be 80 degrees here tomorrow...
The national weather service in sterling virginia has issued a winter storm watch... In effect from late friday night through late saturday night. * precip type... Snow. * accumulations... Heavy snow with accumulations greater than 5 inches. * timing... Snow will begin late friday night and will continue through sunday morning. * temperatures... Upper 20s to lower 30s through the event. * winds... 10 to 20 mph through the event... With gusts of 25 to 30 mph saturday and sunday.
C'mon Joe, I'm not trying to hurt you... I can't help it if it's wonderfully comfortable here in LaLaLand. You know we're waiting for you out here, so whatcha waitin' for??? Clouds and Sun with a high of 80 for today (Friday, one week before X-mas). It's shorts and flip-flops out here! :browani:
It will be snow suits and boots Sunday, we have a 12 inch N'oreaster on it's way here Midnight Saturday into Sunday. Who knows Mike, maybe I will find my way out to sunny California.
50 miles here is the difference between no snow & 15 inches.... Some reports say Gaffney will get an inch of snow, others say 4-8 inches..hmm What I do know is that 3 inches of snow here puts the power out, for 8-12 hours, (not possible up north, lol). They really don't know how to deal with snow down here in SC.... It's still feezing rain & sleet here, as it has been all day, but we'll get some snow here tonight. The mountains of Western NC are getting over a foot of snow, especially an hour away in Asheville. I leave Sunday, so I won't encounter any travel problems on the train hopefully going to NYC (Newark NJ).
Special Weather Statement for Loudoun, VA Updated 18 Dec 2009 11:45 pm Local Time Issued by The National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, MD 10:03 pm EST, Fri., Dec. 18, 2009 ... RECORD BREAKING DECEMBER SNOWFALL FOR BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON METROPOLITAN AREAS BRINGING HAZARDOUS WINTER WEATHER TO THE REGION OVERNIGHT AND SATURDAY... TOTAL STORM SNOWFALL TOTALS OF 1 TO 2 FEET ARE FORECAST TO OCCUR IN THE BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON METROPOLITAN AREAS BY DAWN SUNDAY... WHICH SHOULD ECLIPSE THE DECEMBER RECORDS FOR BOTH CITIES. THE RECORD DECEMBER SNOWFALL FOR WASHINGTON IS 12.0 INCHES ON 18-19 DECEMBER 1932... AND FOR BALTIMORE TO RECORD IS 14.1 INCHES ON 12-13 DECEMBER 1960. SHOULD ACCUMULATIONS EXCEED 14 INCHES... THIS STORM WILL MAKE THE LIST OF THE ALL-TIME TOP 10 SNOWSTORMS ON RECORD FOR BOTH CITIES. HERE ARE SOME HAZARDOUS WINTER WEATHER PREPAREDNESS TIPS... 1. TRAVEL IS NOT RECOMMENDED ON SATURDAY... AS CONDITIONS WILL DETERIORATE RAPIDLY AFTER DAYBREAK. IF YOU HAVE TO TRAVEL SATURDAY IN AN EMERGENCY... CARRY A WINTER STORM SURVIVAL KIT WHICH INCLUDES A CHARGED MOBILE PHONE... BLANKETS... FLASHLIGHT WITH EXTRA BATTERIES... HIGH CALORIE NON-PERISHABLE FOOD... WATER... AND A SNOW SHOVEL. KEEP YOUR GAS TANK FULL... AND AVOID TRAVELING ALONE. LET SOMEONE KNOW YOUR TIMETABLE AND YOUR PRIMARY ROUTE. 2. IF YOU DO GET STRANDED... STAY IN YOUR VEHICLE. ATTEMPTING TO WALK FOR HELP IN A WINTER STORM COULD BE A DEADLY DECISION. RUN THE MOTOR FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES EVERY HOUR FOR HEAT. OPEN THE WINDOW A LITTLE FOR FRESH AIR TO AVOID CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING. MAKE SURE YOUR EXHAUST PIPE IS NOT BLOCKED FROM ICE AND SNOW. 3. IF YOU NEED TO USE A PORTABLE GENERATOR... FOLLOW MANUFACTURERS INSTRUCTIONS TO KEEP THE AREA SURROUNDING YOUR GENERATOR WELL VENTILATED. 4. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SHOVEL SNOW UNLESS YOU ARE PHYSICALLY FIT. HYDRATE YOURSELF OFTEN WITH WATER WHILE SHOVELING... AND TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS. 5. MOVE PETS AND FARM ANIMALS TO SHELTERED LOCATIONS AND ENSURE THEY HAVE PLENTY OF FOOD AND DRINK.
Though it will be cooling down today, it was 84 degrees here on Saturday...:loony: While the East Coast turned into an Alaskan tundra, it was shorts and flip-flops weather in SoCal. Speaking of Mother Nature... On a side note, how many of you have seen "2012"? How nice it was to watch my "beloved" Los Angeles get annihilated for the umpteenth time in a disaster flick... I'm sure L.A. haters around the country loved it. I have to say. When the major quake hits, that's what it looks like, except for the ground caving in and L.A. falling into the ocean bit. It's the most realistic quake-shaking imagery I've ever seen in a movie. Awesome effects there, but then they get too carried away.
No more 80 degree days. Back to the upper 60s here. It looks like will have a sunny Christmas, with normal temps for early Winter. One other thing, though...Just as I get used to it getting dark earlier, after today, it's back to longer days until the first day of Summer, when the days get shorter again. Gotta love the Earth's rotation!
Thanks Mike, it's going to be 80 here also.... Sometime in July, but today it is going to be balmy. Close to the freezing mark.
