Do you think SBC should change there name to AT&T with the old 1969 bell logo when they aquire AT&T.

I think they will either keep AT&T as a division of SBC or rename it to AT&T. Ed Whitacre seems to value the AT&T name and may just rename the whole company. Do you think he'll bring back AT&T Wireless?

With SBC being part owner in Cingular it's a possibility. However, the Cingular execs. really like being the carrier with the most customers, so they won't go down without a fight. I think it would be really interesting to see SBC revive ATTWS, possibly getting customers in markets where they offer landline service and BellSouth does not.

I know this will not be scientific.
Hopefully the AT&T name is still something people can trust.

    AT&T Wireless name hmm.. I don't know.

AT&T doesn't have the right to use the 1969 Bell logo; each of the Baby Bells retained the right to the logo in their territories, so SBC could use the Bell logo in its own traditional territory (as BellSouth still does), but it couldn't use it nationally.

AT&T is the better brand, and the death star logo is much better known than SBC's, so I suspect SBC will rebrand itself as AT&T. I can't see AT&T Wireless coming back unless the Cingular partnership splits up or SBC divests its holdings in Cingular (and I can't see SBC going through with the merger if the FCC, DOJ, or SEC insists on divestment or a breakup).

I personally hope that SBC will take in the AT&T name and rename itself. AT&T is a big part of American history and is A LOT more known that SBC. It'd be nice, but I doubt it, really.. it's sad though, the name is just disappearing a little by little, first the wireless, now forever. :(

I wouldn't be surprised if AT&T just kept it's name and was operated as a division of SBC or if the AT&T name vanished. SBC is huge now and everyone pretty much knows that brand name too. And to be honest, for younger people (mid 20's-mid 30's) the AT&T name does not mean what it meant to older persons.

I know that part of the AT&T breakup they could no longer use the old bell logo. Don't know why but the at the two 7-11's in Logan they have Verizon pay phones, even though Qwest is the wireline provider here. They were put in 2003. They have the bell logo on them so I can't see why they could not do it nationaly, but you could be right.

They prefer to be known as SBC but yes, it was the original Southwestern Bell. It's the same as AT&T who prefers to be called AT&T Corp rather than American Telephone & Telegraph Corporation.

American Telphone and Telegtraph D/B/A AT&T ended in 1994 to become AT&T Corp.
Southwestern Bell Company D/B/A SBC ended in 1999 to be SBC
So the names of the companies are now acronyms, but we know what they stand for. ;)

In USA Today's article dated 1/31/05 this was in the article.

Whitacre, in an interview with USA TODAY, returned the compliment. The SBC chief says he has a soft spot for the fabled AT&T brand name.

Asked if he'd consider dropping the SBC name so that so that he could adopt the AT&T moniker, Whitacre doesn't hesitate.

''Absolutely,'' he says. ''Of course I'd consider that. It's a great name, and an icon in American business.''

Likewise, Whitacre says he'd also consider adopting AT&T's ''T'' trading symbol, which has been a fixture on the New York Stock Exchange for decades.

''We'd have to look at it more closely, but everything is open'' to discussion, he says.

They will probably go the way of Verizon and Cingular come up with a completely different name that will create an great marketing "image" for customers....

Bell Atlantic and Bell South were both strong names in my area, but are now gone....But whatever they do it has got to be more creative than "Sprint Nextel"

I would imagine SBC would love the T symbol. Telephone.

I think the idea of being the Telephone of the NYSE would be too hard to pass up.

I could also see a worldwide business GSM network under the AT&T name much like the internet service they sell to corporate customers.
