I got a few cell phones some very old and some relatively new. I was wondering what are some good ideas to do with old cell phones.
Check with your local wireless store to see if they accept phones for recycling. Or do an Internet search on phone recycling places or organizations who take old phones, refurbish them and give them to the military (for the men and women in service). In the past I've gotten plastic donation mailer bags to send my phones in to be refurbished for military personnel. Just make sure you clear out phone information if you use a CDMA carrier. Call your provider and have them assist you in completely removing your number from the phone (NAM settings). This is more of a safety measure to protect your phone number (optional, if you choose).
Even some retailers have areas where you can recycle your phone... Best Buy is oneof them... I think RadioShack does this also. Perhaps your local cell phone shop participates; For instance, Verizon Wireless has a bin at their stores where you can recycle phones. Just clear all private info before dumping the device
Thanks guys, I would've felt a little bad just throwing them away. I think I'll take Quint's advice with Best Buy since they're located near my office. And since my phones are old, I doubt I'll be able to actually sell them for cash, but hey it's for a good cause.
Selling them isn't always an option. Take my old TDMA Motorola V60. It can no longer be used as TDMA networks don't exist anymore. Unless I can find someone willing to buy it as a collector piece, its only other value is to be recycled.
Featured last year on Ophra: Welcome to Cell Phones for Soldiers! Two teens started this as part of family project. It blossomed when AT&T heard about it and offered to get involved. The teens were presented with college scholarships during the Ophra show.
Besides selling and recycling, yet a third option is to consider your family & friends. In these harsh economic times, kindness can go a long way. One family I'm personally acquainted with was hit hard. While they could still afford minimal wireless service their phone had just died and they didn't qualify for an free phone under any plan. I gifted them my old phone which I was just going to recycle anyway. It was in perfect condition and i had all the paraphenalia that belonged with it (charger, user manual).
I know Verizon has a program called "hopeline" where they take old phones, erase them and donate them over to non-profits for battered and abused women. Look around to see if you can find something similar to that for your old phone to go. Save a landfill and maybe a life.
Donate them to some charity...I think theres many charities who accept old phones even if they dont work they can use the parts. Plus you can feel good about yourself..isnt that better than money?
Well, instead of the local Best Buy like I originally planned I actually donated them to a non-profit on campus (It was some summer event). The funny thing is that I managed to get a date next week with the girl who was collecting the cell phones. Hope it works out.
Don't try to ditch your old phone at sea, it might come back to you http://forums.wirelessadvisor.com/wireless-news/75630-phone-lost-4-days-sea-found.html#post539479 ...i can see the guy having his phone returned to him "Geez, what do I gotta do to get rid of this thing?"
I have an old cell phone with camera, so i would put it to my car just in case accident occur that can take photos, it works and the photos end up helpful for claim Insurance. Or give it to kid coz most of them like taking photos for funs
I got this idea from Burn Notice, then I did some research. I actually considered doing this to my old cellphone, but then I realized that this would run up my cell phone bill.
Yeah! Don't worry abt the old cell phones ,you simply change for recycle and take a new one new technology which should be eco-friendly.Thanks........
