I miss being able to use the my phone in the elevator.

Now that I'm with Cingular I have to finish my call outside or walk up.

This is not really a universal truth about Cingular, you know (former NY'er).
It depends on the building, evevator construction, phone, and antenna build out.

I've used my phone in many elevators in the US and around the world. Not all of course. :)

Being that Verizon & Cingular both use the 850/1900 frequencies, it could be Verizon had a closer tower to your job vs Cingular & this is why you can't use it in the elevator now especially since the 850 penetrates buildings better.

You could look at it this way, your getting more excercise now using the stairs.

And that's what keeps me away from Verizon even though all my family in the NE uses them! It is nice having two 850Mhz, CDMA providers to choose from. A choice very few people in the rest of this country have(at least in the metros)

How did they "rip you off" as you stated? Bills a little higher for a better and more "native" network coverage? I love these generalized statements to be explained...

Verizon charges more than any other carrier out there. Cingular would be a close second. As far as "better and more native coverage", that is subjective and different for everybody. Where I live and travel, Alltel has better and more native coverage, and for less money every month. In Chicago, USCC may be the best, Sprint is best in some parts as is Cingular in other parts. If I lived back in Boston, I would be with Verizon because they generally put most everyone else to shame up there. The one common denominator, Verizon is still by the far the most expensive.

    :D

They really are not the most expensive if you really do accurate comparisons. I like going to the various web sites and pretending to be a new subscriber and "signing up" for new service. I have done my un-scientific research and found out their really isn't that much difference for what you get. I "signed up" for Cingular and found out my monthly costs were almost identical to Verizon's depending on my discount they would offer me. Sprint-Nextel is a little more expensive because i'd have to add $5 for Mobile-to-Mobile. US Cellular and T-Mobile are right about the same if I add the texting packages and insurance like I have with Verizon. I also add about $13 a month for taxes for two lines and all the other surcharges. What would I save by going to the little players in the game I ask myself....more minutes for a the same price? What do I loose....one of the largest most dependable network? Understand , i'm talking about myself here, but I think if most did a little homework instead of making generalized statements , you may agree. I have friends and family with all the carriers around here. In my un-scientific opinion here, I have discovered Cingular and T-Mobile call clarity is not comparable to Verizon. Sprint CDMA does sound good, but they have a tendency to drop more often. Haven't had enough US Cellular calls as only two have their service that I know of. These calls have been to my land line phone at home by the way...as your results may vary...

****** Opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one !!! ***********:lmao:

    HAHAHA...True, very true.

I have considered Verizon for the free m2m to my friends and family up north, but Vzw is the only carrier that has zero service at my house. That is why the "It's the network" slogan angers me. Every carrier works at my home except "America's most reliable." But for 75 bucks, I currently get 2 lines, 1000 minutes, n&w at 7:00, any time contract changes, my circle and free use of the Verizon network when I travel. Good deal I say. I agree that of the national carriers, prices are all pretty close. But, some of the add on options available from the other carriers are attractive. Some people find the options useful, some don't. I personally could not live without my n&w at 7:00 others could care less.

And it also depends on what plans you compare. For example, the Verizon or Cingular $59.99 plan will give you 900 minutes while the Alltel $49.99 plan will give you 1000 minutes. If you compare the plan djjim just mentioned the closest thing Cingular and Verizon offer are 1400 minutes for 89.99 and that's often still not as good of a deal as 1000 min + MyCircle + nights @ 7 for $75.

There are also a number of other times where it is technically inaccurate to say that Verizon charges more. If you compare the $39.99 plans, they actually charge the same and just give fewer minutes on this and most other plans. :p It just depends on your calling habits, what your friends have, and most importantly who has the best coverage at your house and where you travel. :)

The reason i said they will rip you off is on my last bill i had a "get it now" download on my bill and i have it blocked so i can not do that type of download. I make my on ringtones and send them to my phone i can't see paying $2 and$3 for downloads. Then when i talked to them they said someone must have taken the block off, no one else uses my phone but me. Then all they could say was sorry. Sound like "THEY NEVER STOP WORKING FOR ME". If it where not for the early termination fee i'd drop verizon real quick.

So all this over $12 ? I suspect you did something on your phone which caused this fee to be charged to you. If you feel that you were truly "ripped off" , their are consumer agencies that you can contact to have your complaint heard. As far as the "Verizon ripped me off" comment, I don't see that occured. You were charged for a service that Verizon says you utilized. Pay it or debate it, either way you win.

Pay it or Debate It I've done both already. You sound like you work for verizon. They said the same thing you said but its hard to believe that i would order something on my phone at 1:42 am when i'm in the bed.
why is there a need to download something that costs $12 when I can do it for free, which is what I do.

Pay the etf and move your phone to Alltel. I'd love the VX8300! You'll make back the cost of the etf in savings every month. Your phone is finding the Alltel towers anyway. Just go to the source and put some cash in your pocket at the same time.

You can go to the Alltel site and check a compariable plan to what you have now, then take in the other features they have over Verizon such as "My Circle" and you probably could save the cost of the ETF over a period of time by switching & have better coverage where you live, with something like My Circle, you could possibly get away with a smaller minute plan depending on the way you use your phone for calls.

From my understanding you are in Alltel country & they have an excellent network in the Carolina's.

Just got back from classes at Greenville Tech. Service was great in the entire area. I was at Congaree Rd, Haywood Mall, Illuminated bridge, Red Lobster on Pleasantburg Rd, etc. No problems.

Planetfeedback.com is a excellent source for feed back and complaints etc...ive gotten many issues resolved with both Cingular and VZW in a matter of days...your usually dealing with corporate care at that point...

    Whatever works for ME!!!
Oh, don't get me started here. When my wife had cingular, billing was a nightmare. First two months of her one year contract were fine, but after that problems started. Three months in a raw bill was between $300-$400. I had to call every month to have it credited and received apologies and assurances that it wont happen again. But sure it did. On the seventh month she lost all her "rollover" minutes. I called again and was told that she must have used them all. That is over 1000 RO minutes. Yet they didn't appear on any billing statement. After four or five calls, and 40 minutes on hold for supervisor, 500 RO minutes were put back on her account. That's the best they could do, i was told. Finally, after her contract was up and she switched to Verizon, two months in a raw she received statement from cingular saying that she owes $273.56 for ETF plus some outstanding balance. After spending almost two hours on the phone with CS, they couldn't provide any prove of the amount that we supposedly owed, they agreed to drop the matter altogether.

I worked for Cingular for 2 yrs...LONG AGO..these stories are not uncommon...i worked for cingular but had a Verizon phone....That should tell you something...Worst service all around ive ever experienced for inbuilding penetration...well maybe AT&T GSM 1900 before the Buyout....to this day the same 5 friends i know that use Cingular still cannot use any of there cell phones in their Apts or homes...I have perfect service when i visit..Its actually been quite a long going joke between us....

I just got off the phone with a lady friend of mine who carries a Cingular phone for work, and a Verizon phone for personal use. She overused her Verizon phone, battery died, so she had to call me with Cingular. She uses a Blackberry type phone and it was very hard to hear her to all the background noise (road noise, radio etc.) is this common for Blackberry's, or Cingular? She finally had her Verizon V 325 charge up and called me back, wow what a difference. She told me she lost her call and has no service, so she called me on Verizon. What a difference...Verizon call was clear as a bell, and I just had a 90 minute conversation as she traveled towards her home. Never once did she drop the call, and it was easy on the ears. I was dissapointed that Cingular dropped the call on a major interstate, and thought the service was much better here. She was traveling on Interstate 90 going through the Rockford, IL area. I have yet to check the coverage finder, but hope it was just a bad cell site.
