    hi all,

first time posting... hope you can help!

i live in nyc and i bought an unlocked razr on ebay to use with my existing cingular service. popped in my sim card and just about everything works fine... with a few exceptions:

    • certain words on the menu are spelled differently ("message centre", "dialled"... thus the "my phone thinks it's british" subject line)

    • there is a triangle indicator on the main menu which i learned means that i'm roaming.

    • the time is listing in military time (24 hour clock)

    any ideas how to fix?

    thanks!!

You are seeing the difference in vocabulary because the phone was to be sold in Europe. You also see "call divert" instead of call forwarding.

No big deal though. As far as the triangle goes that is the roaming indicator on the chip in that phone. Have no fear though you are not being charged for roaming even if it is roaming.

The odds are is that the phone is seeing AT&T towers as romaing. There are seem fixes to remove the triangle altogether but it isn't worth going into the phone and editing it just for that reason.

I am sure there is a setting for the time under settings> either in call settings or initial call setup, should be on the first line "time and date"

Quint, not to worry. What you are seeing is perfectly normal. As ronnieg56 stated, you have a European RAZR, which means the menus in English are of the UK standard. I find it makes the phone unique (IMO).

The roam triangle is lit because you are using a phone that is not "from" the provider you have. You are NOT roaming. I have the Black RAZR and the V635 and they both show the triangle. I have T-Mobile and I verified with them as to whether this would be a problem, they said emphatically that it isn't. You'll get used to it.

Thirdly, the time can be easily changed. Follow these instructions:

Go into Menu > Initial Setup > Time and Date > Change "Autoupdate" to OFF. Doing this will open up two additional options. You will see the time. Enter into that and you will be able to change the time. Scroll right to get to the "24hr" field. Then scroll to up or down. This is where you can change it to AM or PM. Once this is changed you can reset the "Autoupdate" option back to ON. That's it. Your phone will now be on AM/PM, instead of 24hr.

You will be set. I had the same concerns as you when I got my phone, but not to worry, your phone is just fine!! Good luck. :D

Hi Tony. No I haven't seen it here in NYC papers or their web page yet. Maybe its a territorial thing right now.

I know one thing for sure, getting the Black V3 from Cingular the box will not contain a leather case, data cable, hands-free ear-bud or the pillow :D

I definitely paid more for my Black RAZR than what Cingular will be selling it for, but I don't mind one bit. I have a Black RAZR I can use with T-Mobile. I've had it for two months. I wouldn't want the Cingular version anyway because it will likely be locked. Besides I really like the "Europeaness" of my phone. Regardless of Cingular carrying this phone, I would have ended up buying it the way I did all along.

So I totally agree with Tony!! :D

i have a friend with an unlocked black razr, i'm currently using a sidekick but was curious so i took my sim outta my sk and put it in the razr, it too had the roaming triangle that apparently is nothing to worry about, however it did keep saying "cingular" instead of "t-mobile" is that normal?

also since i have a sidekick and the unlimited data plan, when i switch out my sim will my razr have unlimited data and txt messageing?

    thanks in advance!

It depends on your location. Here in SoCal it can say Cingular if you have T-Mobile service. Mine does. It has to do with the firmware in the phone. Don't worry about the roam triangle, it's normal. The languages are the European edition so that's also normal. I kind of like the "Euro" spellings. Your plan should work on the RAZR, unless it is a Sidekick-specific plan. I would check with T-Mobile to be sure.

I finally checked out the RAZR at a T-Mobile kiosk the other day and I've got to say, seeing it in pictures doesn't do it justice. You really have to see it in person to appreciate how nice it is. I can't wait until T-Mobile gets the Black V3... should be just about the time I'm coming up for a handset upgrade. :D
