I just moved to Brookline MA and have NO service at home...HELP! We have Sprint PCS phones and a T-Mobile Blackberry. Any suggestions? Seems like a repeater could be a good idea, but I'm not sure what they are and how to pick one...
I would recommend taking a look at the DA4000SBR from Digital Antenna. As long as the signal is strong on the roof the coverage (wireless) is 3000 to 5000 square feet. http://www.wpsantennas.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=246&HS=1
Um, rather than spend 100's on a repeater, wouldn't it be easier to port to a 850mhz provider? I believe that's Cingular or Verizon in your area. 850Mhz system's signals travel further and have better building penetration. Sprint is 1900Mhz.
The advice might help out, but some parts of Brookline are trouble spots for all the carriers. It's an issue of zoning. The town has restrictive regulations. Spcifically, the town used to only allow towers on municipal property. http://www.wins-news.com/top_stories/2005/jan/011305-d.php Mid to upper income residential areas like most of Brookline are usually the toughest for wireless carriers to cover well.
The coverage problem in Brookline has been noticed by others. The town has had some work done by a consultant. I don't know how much things have improved: http://www.townofbrooklinemass.com/boards/mcws.html
I'm northeast of Boston. Unless I'm right next to a Verizon cellsite, my Nokia almost always displays 2-3 bars of signal (out of 7), in my opinion, this is an inadequate signal and unacceptable, however thanks to a recent trip, it was determined that the phone is not the problem, but Verizon's network in my area does not enough cellsites.
Verizon and Cingular are both excellent in the Boston area, although you'll have to find which is best for you.
Try a different carrier. If that works, it may be cheaper for you than having to spend the money on a repeater. If it doesn't work for you, then look into other options that have been suggested here.
Carriers have been trying to improve coverage in Brookline, MA for years. It is very difficult in Brookline. The best thing for customers to do is to complain to the carrier you subscribe to, with specific locations and time(this way the carrier can catalog the areas and continue to pursue improving the area), as well as speaking to the town or representatives of the town to have them push for better wireless service. Also, try to find out when wireless carriers are in town seeking zoning approval, so you can support the efforts.
I was in the Brookline area over the last two days with Cingular. I was in the downtown area and off the main drag a bit on Beacon Street and around the T train. I had very strong signals everywhere, no different than in downtown Boston. Brookline is a pretty small area, I'm sure there are some problem spots, but given the reasonably flat terrian, I would think that it is pretty good in most place now. Just my observations.
Exactly, u can bug the carriers all ya want, sounds like they'd all be well aware already. With towns like that ur best bet is go to ur own town board meetings and complain to them. Since it sounds like they are the source of the problem in the first place. Regardless the carrier, the "free" phone probably won't work all that well. Sad, but u get what u pay for, bottom line, in tough spots like that. That's if it's really all that tough for them. Obviously speakin somewhat out of ignorance of the area. But there are similar places like that everywher, so not totally ignorant.
