It works great! I know I was going to take my phone back because of the headset issue, but I just loved the other functions too much. And after adding my own wallpapers and free ringtones to my phone, I can't take it back now! heh heh The GAGIN and Balpatch did the trick, I now have my own little mini-photo album on my phone!
Sorry for being spacey (LOL!!!) but could someone post exactly how to do this in plain english? I am sure most of you guys can do this but I am like, brew what, where, cable, etc. Again, sorry for the ignorance.
I second that. I'm perfectly capable of buying the USB cable at Radio Shack and downloading the stuff, but could someone step us through it at a level a newbie could understand? Thanks.
I am wondering, what program do you use to convert any pic to the BMP format and will allow you to chage the size to 120x85 i think it is. Another thing, in the forums, im not sure exactly what cable, I could nto see one for LG on the RadioShack web site. And what downloads do you need. He says to download brewImageIndex.dat but does not give a link for it. If any of you could help me out I would greatly appreciate it.
Ok guys, since I just grabbed another beer I'm ready to type all this out It did take a few minutes for me to figure this out as the instructions were....well confusing. So maybe this will help. 1) You need a data cable. Most says the cable for the VX1/10 work... well I am using the datacable for the 510. The USB to Serial one that's on COM4 on WIndows XP 2)You will need to download GAGIN (Get Around Get It Now) I'm not sure where you can get this on the web as someone sent it to me by email. 3)You will need to download BALpatch by following the above link. I'm using version 5 4)You will also need to get the Mapedit program (again by following the above link) 5)you're ready to upload ringtones and wallpapers. 6) Install all the software and connect the VX4400 to the computer with the cable 7) start GAGIN to make sure it sees your phone. it will ask you what COM port your phone is on...again, mine was on COM 4...yours may be different 8)Once you know it sees your phone, you know if you see the /sounds/ringers directories on the left side of the window... you can exit and start BALpatch. 9)this was the tricky part that took me a few minutes to figure out. On the line where is says "Browse Directory" it already says "brew" Well you can type in "user", "dloadindex", or keep it at "brew" You will also see a list of files (assuming of course the BalPatch is in the GAGIN directory) of all the GAGIN files. Look for BREWappLoader.exe and click on it. It will say "patched" What that means is that you've changed the directory of the apploader. It will now see whatever directory you entered on the phone itself. user = the ringers directory brew=the wallpapers directory dloadindex=the map files so when you type in "user" for example, and then click on BREWapploader.exe it will make BREWapploader see the ringtones directory only. same as if you type in :brew" you will only see the directory where the wallpapers go. 10) so if you typed in "dloadindex" and clicked on the BREWapploader.exe and it says "patched" you are now ready to upload some wallpapers. 11) start GAGIN by closing BALpatch and clicking on BREWapploader.exe, it will ask for COM port etc. you will see two files called brewImageIndex.map and brewRingerIndex.map download the image one into the same directory where you have the mapedit. 12) you have to make a small image file using photoshop or any other paint program -- it's supposed to be 120 x 120 pixels. say you name it mypic.bmp, well then you start mapedit and you will see a bunchof blank boxes, just type in (THE SAME CASE) mypic.bmp in the first box and then click save. 13) in GAGIN, delete the old "brewImageIndex.map" and upload yours.... this is important since this file contains the pointer to where your image file is...if you don't do this, your phone won't know where your wallpaper is. 14)close out GAGIN and the restart BALPatch. Type in "brew" and clcik on BREWapploader.exe to change the directory to the brew (wallpaper) directory. 15) restart GAGIN and it should now see the brew directory. You will see a bunch of folders named es and en and others with numbers. Make a new directory called "shared" This is where you put the wallpapers. Uplaod mypic.bmp and then close out GAGIN. 16) check your phone to see if the image is there by pressing left softkey -8-2-3-1 and then right softkey and choose "downloaded" you should see your picture there. Hope that helps a bit guys..... by the way the same thing can be done with the ringtones. I've downloaded tons of free midis and used them as ringtones...
Much appreciated!! I have heard you need either XP or 2000 to use this with the VX4400. Is that true? Great job on the transcription. I would never have attempted that after a beer. Excellent!!!
Yes, it was specifically said on Howard Forums that you need 2000 or XP. The others will not work. Check this FAQ out for further details.
I'm now convinced to go buy the cable to do this...but I have one more question. Can I use the pictures I download as "picture id" or is it limited to backgrouds only?
I would like to just give a very big "THANK YOU" to all that worked on cracking this phone! You're AWESOME!!! Click below for a pic of my hacked background with analog clock! VX4400 with hacked background and analog clock ALSO...you can use whatever images you upload to the phone as ringer ID pics. So, get out there and buy your cables!!!
HKPhooey or anyone who can help. I am trying to upload a bmp onto my phone, but when I go into the downloaded section on the phone its not there. When I am on GAGAIN it appears. I am confused to what I did incorrectly. Any help would be appreciated. And HK that was a very easy way to follow. Thanks..
ded - did you go into your dloadindex and change the brewimageindex.map file? also make sure that the extension is in lowercase and has the same caps as the reference in the map file.
Ok, I made it through step 10 with no problem, but on step 11, where it says you'll see the 2 .map files in GAGIN, I dont see'em. Can somebody help?
Does anyone know if we have the capabilities to send ringers from one person to another. I have windows 98 and would like to have new wallpaper and ringers. Thanks In Advance
Not thru Verizon network. You can USE GAGIN. With GAGIN you need at least download one ring tone then copy the rest.
You, sir, are a god amongst men. Or...well, maybe a demigod, but definitely no mere mortal. This worked like a champ, first time (balpatch 8 was only variation). Now if I could just figure out where that first bootup vzwireless bitmap is... Thanks for the writeup, especially since howardforums has been all wonky and all i could do was see that the backgrounds had been hacked, but not how to do it. You rock! -T
Some things I've learned in the past 12 hours: 1) BEFORE YOU MODIFY ANY FILE ON YOUR PHONE MAKE A BACKUP OF THE ORIGINAL ON YOUR COMPUTER!! 2) The hardest part to get use to in this process is every time you want to look at a new directory on your phone you have to close gagin, open balpatch, type in the directory you want to see, click on the brewapplication.exe file in the balpatch list, then open up gagin again and connect on the proper com port, although it usually remembers the last successful port. 3) If you leave the directory field blank in balpatch and apply it to brewapplication.exe you end up viewing the root directory on you phone which shows EVERYTHING. 4) The ringers were a pain because I had to create a directory in a directory in a directory on the phone. (/user/sound/ringer) 5) I haven't figured out where the picture id pics are stored yet but that's next.
any word on how to get an animated wallpaper to work? I went to the Yahoo! Groups: t720tonesandimages and i noticed that all the wallpages there are in .gif format. Can only the T720 view .gif files? also, i want to try to get my dancing banana on my phone too but it's in .gif format.
I read that the png format supports animations, is that true? The problem I've found with png files is they don't display with all the colors on the phone.
I'm in there!!! I just wanted to say THANKS!!!!!...to All that have helped especially HKPhooey Your tutorial was Very clear and worked perfect. I was Originally on windows ME and I can confirm none of this stuff will work on it. I reformated last night and install 2000pro on here and now eveyrthing is working great. I got the $20 futurefial cable for the Vx10 at radio shack and it works fine. (you dont need to buy any software) I changed my wallpaper and Erased The STUPID "verizon Wireless" Banner from the screen (thanks dedtees for the drag and drop tip, I needed to do that) Only One question? I already edited my brewRingerIndex.map now, what directory do I upload my mid files to? I've tried to Balpatch to "user" but it does not work. Do i have to create "user"? I read Somewhere I have to Buy a ringtone to setup this directory, Is this true??? Thanks So Much everyone for all your help!!!! I plan on uploading many backgrounds to these groups in appreciation http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vx4400images/
Yeah, you have to create the user directory, then a ound directory in that, then a ringer directory in that. Balpatch to the root to start (blank.) For more info click Here
Man you guys are the best!!!!! Everything is working great!!! JAY was right all you have to do is Create the directory "user" in the root directory then balpatch into "user" and create "sound" then balpatch into "user/sound" and create "ringer" Creating the directories all at once in the aploader will not work you must balpatch into each directory Thanks So much !! PEACE TastelessB On the vx4400 yahoo group.... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vx4400images
