Now, a cellphone that can advise you!

    Agencies | November 29, 2004 13:51 IST
    Last Updated: November 29, 2004 14:13 IST

Two Massachusetts Institute of Technology scientists are developing a cellphone that is so smart it can tell what you think and even predict your next move. It can even offer advice to you.

Nathan Eagle and Sandy Pentland, the two MIT scientists, are working on a 'mind-reading programme,' according to New Scientist and are currently running the software on 100 Nokia's 6600 Smartphones that have been given to students to try out. The phone uses context message logging software and Bluetooth chips.

Over a period of time, based on your daily pattern of use, the phone learns about the things you do, when you do them, who you call, et cetera, says a research published in the journal New Scientist.

The phone studies the user's habits by logging when heor she makes voice or text calls, or uses phone applications like an alarm clock, reminders or the camera.

Citing an example, the study says that your phone can learn that whenever you call at least three friends after 5 p.m., you tend to leave the office by 5.30 p.m. and meet these friends at some prearranged bar. More importantly, if you have a big presentation the following morning, the phone warns you not to drink too much lest you mess up your performance.

New Scientist said that the phone might also be able to evaluate how good a relationship is by how often the user calls a certain friend; so much so that "it might even pick up on a flirtation before the user notices."

Great idea but I still prefer to get advice from other people, technology is always great but it can still have limits.

I wonder if this would be expanded onto phones which do not have the same software flexibility like the Symbian OS phones.

That's creepy... combine that technology with a Bluetooth enabled phone and you've got SkyNet & WWIII. Isn't the ever advancing world of technology great?

Fine, if it wants to predict my next move, then it can learn how to pay bills, do homework and shop for groceries! :p

The Terminator: "The Skynet Funding Bill is passed. The system goes on-line August 4th, 1997. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug."

    Sarah Connor: "Skynet fights back."

The date of August 4, 1997 should be changed to the release date of the phone....and the date of August 29 should be changed to 25 days after the phone is released. :browani: :smilebig:

I thought that was in Terminator 2? Terminator 1 was when Arnold was trying to kill John Connor practically the whole movie. ;)

    No, I haven't seen T3.

Actually T1 was Arnold trying to kill Sara Connor before she had John. T2 was Arnold trying to protect John Connor from the liquid metal guy (T-1000 - which sounds like the name of a phone). T3 is Arnold trying to protect John Connor's future wife, and about Judgement Day. T3 featured the Terminatrix - the woman who has all the gizmos to kill, and keep her hair in place at the same time. Just thought I'd clear up any Terminator movies confusion. Everyone can go back to bed now.....

    BTW, WA Rules!!! :patriot:

What we need is a cellphone that can tell us how coverage is for every carrier in any place we pick. That will eliminate these forums for good! ;)

I would not ever relay on AI for this reason it does not really understand you 100% unless it has fealings and compation. So it would always give you a volcan answer that is purely logical. :nono:

Cingular or Verizon would tamper with the FW and spew out crap about how Cingular/Verizon is so great, etc. etc.

Watch out for the Motorola T-1000's. Very hard to distinguish them from the other Terminators. They have everything... BT, CF slot, trimode with GSM romaing, etc.

Played by the ULTRA HOT Claire Danes.

And it T3 that is when Arnold explains that the events which took place in T1 & T2 delayed Judgement Day but could not stop it.

    I'll third it.

When I went to see it, when she came on screen someone in the audience said "Wow, Arny's changed", it just cracked me up.
