Tonight when I was out to dinner, I walked through the bar and noticed this guy reading his email on a new BB Pearl. I stopped and asked him how he liked his phone. Anyway this guy was the NE Senior Director for TMobile. he informed me that in the next couple of weeks TMobile will have the same promo as Altell. The 5 most people you call no matter of network will be free! He also said his BB Pearl was a fabulous phone. Except he can only make it through the day on a single charge.
It's not exactly the same, though very similar. 5 to 10 isn't the biggest difference I can think of, but it is a difference.
It is most noticeably more restrictive than Alltel's MyCircle. This is kind of expected because T-Mobile is a national carrier, but I'm surprised to see T-Mobile, out of all carriers respond to Alltel in this way. T-Mobile, from what I've heard, is very bad about booting subscribers use excessive minutes and this plan seems to be in contradiction to that. Just a couple other points though. You can only change your 5 contacts once a month compared to Alltel allowing changes to your 10 contacts every day beginning at midnight. With T-Mobile, I'm thinking you have to have a qualifying phone. You do indeed lose free M2M unless you pay for it as an add-on. Here is a link to another thread here on WA that has been around for a while: http://forums.wirelessadvisor.com/wireless-news/54675-t-mobile-trials-5-a.html
Remember the days when VZW was that first in the market place with unique promotions. Now they barely do anything.
They don't need to but customers like me that have been with them, Airtouch & VZW for 9 years and 7 months need some excitement in their cell phone company. Fresh promotions! Exclusivity on the latest cell phones (like the Pearl and Razer). After a while having the best network is not everything. Thats why people buy new cars. The thrill of ownership, some thing new and appealing.
VZW doesn't need new and exciting promotions, because they have the most loyal customer base among the "big four." T-Mobile is trying to win and keep customers; Sprint's in the same boat. Lest we forget, VZW got the RAZR V3m (the one with expandable memory and a 1.23MP camera) before Cingular got the V3i (similar phone, only with iTunes); they were the first with the Treo 700p and 700w; they are currently the only one with the Motorola Q; they are the first American carrier with a 3.2MP camera phone (the Samsung A990). They are also the only carrier with the LG Chocolate and the KRZR They will soon have the Motorola SLVR, the LG Chocolate (flip), along with an update LG "V." I admit that it would be nice if they offered more plan options, such as earlier nights, rollover/carryover minutes, "my circle," etc., but they will if they begin to lose customers at an alarming rate.
My guess is that around Christmas time we will see some type of new promotion. I remember reading somewhere that a good percentage of VZW's customer base comes up for renewal then. That may make things interesting since I'm sure there will be others looking for a cheaper alternative. The only way they would keep me after my contract expires is if they have 7pm night and weekends. That is becoming killer being a college student. I love the service the provide but I can go to Cingular and get more.
LURS, actually Alltel is also offering the KRZR beginning on Friday. I know exactly what you mean as a college student johndeere, it was the main reason I decided not to go with Verizon again. With the minutes I use, over 3000 last month total it would have been quite a bit more for me to go with Verizon when instead, I just went with Alltel and got a MyCircle plan. I ended up saving a bunch of $$ because pretty much all of my calling is to about 9 numbers so I could cut down on my anytime minutes. Even before MyCircle came out I was thinking about switching over because Alltel offers nights at 7. The prices of Verizon's plan would really have caused me to make some tough sacrifices. Really such as not heading home near as much because it's a 8 hr. drive because an extra $20-$30/month adds up. But I'm sure LURS is right, if Verizon ever does start losing customers at an alarming rate, I'm sure they have enough in the bank account to offer some nice promotions but as long as they keep gaining customers, I don't think we'll have to worry about that!
