Verizon's New, Ridiculous Wireless Data Prices - If they can't control apps and hardware, they'll just squeeze the pipe... - dslreports.com Verizon “Enhanced Multimedia Phones” to require data plans, death of the Vpak, and more : Boy Genius Report I first read this story on DSLReports. The original came from BonGeniusReport. What do you all think?
I'm just glad they can't touch my (truly) unlimited data, 500 anytime, 7pm nights/weekends, 11 my circle numbers, and unlimited messaging for 89.99 legally until 2011.
"Legally" can't they just terminate your contract whenever they feel they're not getting their money's worth out of you?
That's true. But I got a $50 Blackberry pearl flip 8230 (so whatever the retail value is) and no etf :browani: actually two since I have a second line.... Haha, it wouldn't surprise me if they did though. Fortunately I have other options if necessary. Assuming t-mo, sprint, and att don't go bankrupt by then.
I guess as these carriers start boosting the costs for the plans & requiring higher fees for "Smart type" phones, it may make people decide not to get one & stick with a basic phone, unfortunatly now that they have become more mainstream & more people see what the phones can do, they will want the abilities & be willing to pay the extra fee. I like how the "Premium" plan is only a penny more then a select with the 25MB addition & it makes people want it at that point. Does anyone make sense of why companies & the govt want to rasie rates & taxes when the economy is so bad? I understand the concept behind it to increase lost revenues but it seems so backwards to me.
It's all about data. If everyone was happy with just voice, the carriers would just leave their CDMA and GSM networks in place until they rotted, and the price of voice calls would be very cheap. But the cellular future is about all IP and fast data. And that needs expensive network upgrades. And someone has to pay for that. ...(see where I'm going? ) I don't really agree in principal with forcing people to take data plans, especially if they don't plan to use them, but I can see the carriers are taking a "carrot and stick" approach: if they can't tempt you into taking a nice smartphone and giving you reasons to use mobile broadband (ie: the carrot) then they will force you to take a plan anyway (ie: the stick). I think if the minimum data plan people have to take is $5-10 for 30MB or so per month, that's not too bad, since most people use some data anyway. If the carriers are forcing expensive data plans (ie: $20-30 a month or more) then thats wrong, and will probably drive away customers, or at least drive them onto pre-paid plans.
I do agree that if it was voice only then they wouldn't touch anything but when you think about it, they are the reason it's not, because they got greedy & wanted more money they tempted people with the iPhone & Blackberry's then got the majority hooked & others interested then "We hooked them" and time to make more money. I think their downfall was not expecting so many people to be interested so fast & now like AT&T they are caught having to upgrade their network fast & having to deal with alot of complaints from the iPhone users mainly. Had Verizon or one of the other carriers went with the iPhone I believe they would have dealt with the same problems with their networks from so many users. I am sure we will see if they keep forcing people to more expensive plans, but at the same time the carriers will be "We are upgrading to faster networks, adding towers & fiber etc..." to keep the customers feeling it's worth the additional money. I hoped that wireless rates would have gone down like landlines but the carriers were smart adding the data part to keep the prices up there.
How in the hell are you going to charge 9.99 for 25 MB's that's insane. I will never join this company.
The problem is once 1 company does it & gets away with it or it appears the "Chatter" isn't as loud on the crazyness & lack of people willing to get it, the others will follow. So it won't matter somewhere down the road.
