Here's a question I would like answered: Does anyone know when Nextel trademarked the words "Push-to-Talk" and "PTT" ? I heard it was early summer. If that is true, then this is all because of some BS delaying tactic. Anyone know, or know where to find out?
OK...I just answered my own question. It seems Nextel started the process in January 2003, when it became plainly obvious that competitors were serious. The process was finalized June 20th, 2003. So basically, they had this stuff for ten years and only recently decided to trademark it. I found another article stating that the term "Push-to-Talk" and "PTT" has been around and in use for more than 22 years...mainly by Ham radio operators and pilots. This is such BS. How does one start something? Such as a petition, chain letter, anything. I wanna write that company and tell them what miserable _______'s they are. I am sick to death of Nextels crap. If they are not worried about their core customer base, then why all the posturing? Because they ARE worried. D@mn....need some new phones to come out or something...have something else to talk about. Anyone see that LG-6000 killer, the Samsung a670 yet?? It's on phonescoop. I realize many of my posts today have been harsh. I apologize. I just get more and more frustrated the more I learn about the situation. Do you realize Verizon was calling it "Push-to-Talk" before Nextels trademark was approved? And as soon as it was..BAM! Lawsuit. That's just tacky, bad, nasty business. That stuff just gets under my skin. Sorry you guys have to read it.
Actually, they filed on January 17th of 2002 according to public record. They then reaffirmed registration and intent on April 22, 2003. That kind of sucks that they did it over a year and a half ago....... that'll be harder to fight. They also did PTT as a trademark on January 18th 2002.
I see that you are correct. So they did this because their patent ran out. Still bogus. All I ever remember them using is "Direct Connect" BTW..thanks for the link! This forum is a great research tool...ask a question and everyone finds the stuff you don't know where to look for.
EXACTLY. That makes it even worse in my eyes. They had a patent.... patents are designed for you to be able to have enoguth time to make a product the best it can be, and to build brand recognition from that product's reputation. They blew it. When the patent ran out, they said "oh s__t... we need more time... we're a one trick pony!!!" and now they're just buying time to try and pull one out of the old arse. IMO anyway.
I wonder if Verizon patented all the new features they have in the new PTT that Nextel does not have, like the presence feature?
From what I understand the Trademark office has suspended the PTT mark and neither the PTT or the Push to Talk terms have been registered they still do not have registration numbers(they are under review). Here is a copy from TESS for the PTT mark. Thank you for your request. Here are the latest results from the TARR web server. Is G'Kar the guy from Babylon 5? The guy with the red face that was his icon is the devil creature from the Tom Cruise movie "Legend"
Thanks, devil-man! I am considering making it into a T-shirt. Maybe with the right connections off of a public forum even you too could get one....
Hmm things seem to be lookin up with two what appears to be positive comments by Delta and Ceno. I am just ready for the PTT to go ahead and come out. Haha the suspense is just killing me.
I've only posted in the LG forum like twice and I probably won't get the v60p right away, maybe a month or so after it comes out.
I don't know if I can say the same. If we get them right away, I may wait a few days so I can get a better deal through work. If not, I'll probably just go to the Corp VZ store and get it immediately.
JJSeminole...good to see you will be coming over from "the dark side of the force." Now I know what Luke Skywalker must've felt like at the end of "Jedi"! It should also help any hip problems you have from carrying that thing around on your belt, and your arm muscles should even out when you don't have to do dumbell curls every time you use your phone.
I skimmed through this thread, so I am not sure if this was mentioned or not, but I don't think it was. Phonescoop has the A690's release date listed as August 2003. Samsung SCH-A690 Hopefully that is a good sign.

Well I must say the Nextel phones do get banged up a lot when I'm walkin around with it on my hip. It's been scratched up left and right even when I'm trying to be careful and not hit objects. Oh well though ... Nextel just really irritates me now cause I can't change to any decent plan without a contract extention. And here pretty soon the only thing they have going decent for them (Direct Connect) won't have the corner in the market anymore. Anyhow it's a good feeling knowing that I will be on the right side of the force again . Maybe now the force will be with me.
The only good thing about Nextels' phones is that they will stop a small caliber round......trust me. Man I miss working in Detroit, it was never boring
I'm not sure exactly what all has been in the news, so let me ask this: What new PTT feature do you thinkis the most exciting, or what have you heard lately? I figure I can talk about whatever people already know..
I'm not sure if this means anything or not but, I called customer service yesterday to complain about my bill. After I had settled that I asked the rep. if he knew about any new services coming out, and of course he mentioned PTT. I asked him if he had any pricing on plans, phones, etc.. He actually gave me a price of $200 for the phone but was unable to give me any info on the pricing of the actual service. As far I as know, the customer services reps have been very hush-hush about the entire thing. Is this a sign that the release is fast approaching?
