I thought I saw a press release last year where it said Verizon added 100 cell sites to NYC metro. I am guessing if it were true it would be mostly pico and micro cells.

Any network engineers (SNSE or DAD or anybody) who knows if a tower is 95% to 100% capacity does the cells reception range go down a little??
In hope someone can answer that.

A CDMA cell near full capacity definately loses a slight bit of range, & is known as the "breathing" effect. It's not alot, but it can be enough to be noticeable.

When you are within the last 30ft of its effective range...HELL YEAH!!!!!

I felt like it was 2001 with sprint...I HATE that feeling.

While this is definitely true, my understanding is that carriers generally turn away calls or holld them at a certain level to prevent this from happening, so I don't really think its an issue in the "real world" although it is certainly a technical one.

Dude, have you ever been to New York? A tower five blocks away in most directions would be unusable. If, for example, the tower were on 37th and 7th, you couldn't use it (topography). If it were on 47th and Broadway, you couldn't use it (too much signal interference across Times and Duffy Squares). And if it were five crosstown blocks away -- say, 42nd and Lex, which would be essentially on top of Grand Central Station, or 42nd and 12th, which would be atop the Lincoln Tunnel -- you could easily have half a million people between you and the cell site. Think about what Times Square looks like, think about the topography of New York, particularly those tall buildings getting in the way and being full of people who are on VZW cell phones. Remember, VZW is by far the most common carrier in NYC, mostly because when this all started to explode, it was NYNEX Mobile or nothing.

You might be right, he might have five or six cells to choose from -- and they could easily be completely, totally full.
