Sorry this is long. I line in NE Ga. on the Ga/Sc line. I switched from cingular 2 years ago because of range. I was not getting service between SC. going down I-85 to Atlanta (where I work). I got Verizon and it did great. It worked so good that we took out our land line. But around april of 2004. The service got worse. My husband use to use his phone at work. (in lavonia) but no longer has range. He gets text messages hours or a day later. I use to get full range in the house. Now I sit in the same spot on the phone and my calls drop and I go to no service. My range bars are always moving. I get my messages a day or 2 after someone sends them. Comming from Atlanta to Home. I drop 7 or 8 times in that 1 1/2 hour trip. I can be sitting at home and my phone will beep saying I missed a call. The phone never rang. Where we use to get service in this area. We no longer can. And it seems like all this has happened since they put the new tower up in hartwell. But there should be no reason I drop calls in atlanta. We have Motorola T730 and T720 phones. Verizon has replaced our phones several times even after the warranty has been out. I call customer No Service and all they tell me to do is upgrade the software. They say they will call back but they don't. I go to the store 40 miles away and they say there is no reason the phones shouldn't work. But the store in Gainesville, Ga say they hear this all the time from people in NE Ga. And they report it but they don't seem to get any answers either. We had friends with different phones with verizon and it did the same to them. They switched to cingular and get great service. I am stuck for another year. So does anyone know what could be going on?
not to say it could be your phoens but ive heard the cdma (verizon) version of the phones you have were kind of bad........ but it sounds like the network too.. more than likely the towers in ur area?... but.. i would call verizon to test the network, and if not that, go to a local verizon store and have your phones checked, if it's only been about a year you should still be under warranty with ur phones... good luck (sry if it dont seem like good info.. im new lol  )
VZW's coverage has been deterioriating in Atlanta since November or so -- it looks like the problems have now spread beyond downtown and Sandy Springs to rural NE GA as well, or started going downhill there (although I've been in that area MANY times and had no problems) before they did around here. Something is definitely up with VZW around here, and it isn't good. -SC
UPDATE: We received new phones. In Fact we have swapped out 4 times in the last 3 weeks with Verizon. The Customer Service at the store has been trying to help us. No Luck. They all do the same. No matter what brand. The only one that works half way is the Motorola V265. Also I did receive a call back from Tech Service. They said that" we now live in a so called dead area." After all this time of having service now it is dead. They said they had to turn the tower (what ever that means) And Turn DOWN the signal because of other cell providers. They said that if we could not find a phone that would pick up enough range that we could get out of our contract. I told him we had already switched phones again and they got us in another 2 year contract. He said it did not matter that since they no longer could provide service that we would not be held to our contract. And he also called the manager at the verizon store. So at least if I can't get range... I am atleast getting Some customer service. Oh well.. We will see how this goes.
So this means they left their TOWER Location and you're now picking up signal from a farther Tower. At least VZW acknowledges it and is offering you to get out of the contract.
Sound like perhaps the re-oriented the panels to a new azimuth and perhpas pointed them further down from the horizon to reduce their reach. Apparantly there was some inteference with another provider's signals based on what you say they said.
It certainly wouldn't be interference with another A-side 850 carrier anywhere near Atlanta...the only place within 200 miles of downtown Atlanta or even Hartwell where interference with an adjacent A-side 850 carrier could possibly be an issue is along the GA/AL state line, and from all I've seen Unicel isn't at all ____ about VZW's signal spilling over into their coverage area. Interference with Nextel, SoLINC, or public safety radio could explain antenna adjustments, though... -SC
I'd think that VZW would be trying to install a new tower somewhere to fill in that new gap then, since they had to re-adjust the panels on the existing tower??? But, hey, at least you can get out of your contract if you want.
Last update with Verizon. We are out of our contract. With no fees and no extra charges plus we got $36.45 credit comming to us. They could not provide us service they once had. I did ask them about a new tower and they said the one in hartwell WAS the new tower. Hartwell is only 1 mile from us and the tower is mabey 2. They even had a tech call us while he was out riding the road in our area and actually asked me what roads he needs to go down to test the areas I was talking about. He also confirmed that it is more than a mile of dead area. He even went into town and lost connection and received no-service on his cell. And that area they said they had good range. Now they know. So right now I have no cell phone service. But the guy said he would keep me updated on improvements.
Well, hey, at least they provided you with good customer service if they can't provide cell service to you good luck on whatever you're doing next.
I feel your pain, I went thru this with VZW twice in the past few months. I am in W Marietta. My V710 (swapped several times) was connecting to a tower 4 miles away even though there was one 1.25 miles from my house. After several calls to/from VZW Tech services, they let me out of my contract. My problem was missed calls and taking 10-12 tries to connect. The signal bar went between full bars 1x and full bars Analog, just kept bouncing. I switched to Cingular and had immediate improvement (my cell now works out of my home). I liked VZW, and don't understand how service would just deteriorate. VZW techs did tell me there are no new plans for additional towers/cells in my area for the next year and a half (exact quote). I live in 30064. They better get on this or they will continue to lose business.
Wow. I also live in west Cobb. I had the impression VZW had all of this area pretty well blanketed (maye they DID). Sprint coverage has generally gotten better the past 5 years, and is pretty solid all over Cobb now.
Texas got the lion share of the money last year, about a billion in tower development. Did you know that out of every dollar profit they pull, they dump 25 cents back into network development?
Very interesting. I had another thread "Moving to Atlanta...." sort of asking for advice on VZW. I think I'm going to visit the Cingular store when I get there! Maybe I'll keep the VZW account open awhile for family and friends in MI and give Cingular a try. I kinda want one of those new RAZR phones anyway!!
I have problems every time I'm in Atlanta. I have a Cingular (ATT) phone that works much better than Verizon now. I have noticed some degredation of service in South Carolina as well. Verizon better fix it fast. I know a bunch of people who are considering dumping them because they just aren't what they used to be. I'm having trouble justifying paying the premium rate for my Verizon phone anymore. I may drop them in March when my contract comes up.
I'm in the process of moving to Atlanta so have been following this thread closely for awhile. I was in Atlanta for the past week (including a two-day side trip to Hilton Head SC). I never had any problems w/ VZW anywhere. I'm using a v710 so maybe that helps a little but I guess I expected much worse from reading these posts.
It is possible that Verizon has fixed some of the issues they were having. Most problems on the boards seem to be between Atlanta and Alpharetta. I guess if you were in the southern part of Atlanta you may find the service good.
One of my employees lives down in Fayetteville and has issues driving back to downtown Atlanta in a few spots. Mostly just bad quality signal, but some drops, etc.
That, of course, includes most of the major business and shopping districts (downtown, Midtown, Buckhead, Perimeter, Sandy Springs, North Point) as well as some of the NIMBY-est parts of town (Dunwoody, Brookhaven, residential areas of Buckhead, etc.) Pretty much everyone's coverage on the Southside is more stable than coverage on the Northside because of lower population density and usage, less challenging terrain, and relative lack of NIMBY issues. Still, Cingular (both networks...blue because of poor buildout and orange because of system boundary issues...Cingular is dead in much of southern Douglas and far SW Fulton) and Metro PCS (who doesn't even cover Peachtree City at all -- WTF?) tend to have the most issues on the Southside...T-Mobile and Sprint are OK and VZW, Nextel, and SoLinc tend to be the best. -SC
