I was lookin' around on hofo and saw This... some people said it wouldn't and couldn't happen and a few people were all fired up about it and since it was kinda hard to get a stright answer, I figured i'd ask what the "more experienced people" thought, haha.
That has been questioned before. Personally, I don't think it is going to happen since Alltel is doing pretty well by themselves. I think that the FCC wouldn't approve it, but I may be wrong. Although you never know. It might happen.
I don't think it is needed, nor would Verizon want to spend that kind of money and go through the pains of a merger, the better path is for Verizon to continue to purchase spectrum when they can and build their own networks. I personally think a Verizon US Cellular deal is more likely than a Verizon Alltel deal.
I think what is happening is Verizon and Alltel are in talks right now. They are not in merger talks, but on network and airwave swap. Once the merger with Western Wireless and Alltel is complete they will probably have to divest networks in Nebraska and Kansas. What probably happened was the words Verizon and Alltel are in talks somehow became Verizon and Alltel are in merger talks.
If what Agent is saying is correct, VZW might have native coverage in some areas of those states mentioned sometime in the future, which would be great. Does anybody know how long it might still take for this merger to be approved?? Seems like it's been going on forever.
Last I heard Late July or August for the WWC/Alltel deal to complete. I am not saying that Verizon will be getting anything. All I am saying that they are in talks on what they want to do. Cingular or US Cellular or someone else could get divestment properties, but I do think Cingular probably is out of the question, but you never know.
Thanks for the timeframe, I think it would make sense for VZW to be interested in possbile diverstments in KS and Nebraska since they are not licensed to cover many areas there and this is a big hole in data coverage for travelers.
I thought the FCC indicated they would approve one more wireless merger after Cingular/AT&T Wireless, I presume that one would be Sprint/Nextel.
as an alltel employee i can tell you under no circumstance will alltel sell to verizon mainly bc the executive team despises them. what employees are being told is a merger with a cable provider is likely the names time warner and comcast are being thrown about. i have heard its eminent and a final decision may be announced as early as april - may timeframe.
You do realize this post is almost 2 years old. Now a cable company or consortium of cable companies is a possibility, since they are working with Sprint to provide wireless service, it would be a way for Sprint to be involved in an Alltel purchase without being weighed down any more. It could be interesting to see if this happens, I still won't rule out a private equity firm buying them up as well.
honestly i think that Verizon should start by getting the other 40% of their company from Vodafone before they think about merging with another U.S. company and i think that Verizon and USCC is more likely........or divestment in the areas shown
