Verizon is a merger between several different companies from all across the nation. Such as the New England states, I believe they were NYNEX or Atlantic Bell. In Colorado, I'm betting they were either Airtouch or Comm-Net. In my area (rural Utah), they werer Comm-Net.

Verizon was formed from Airtouch(who just before that had bought Commnet), GTE/Contel, Bell Atlantic Mobile, and Primeco. Here in California, we had both GTE/Contel and Airtouch.
