Verizon Wireless to overhaul its phone and data pricing plans Boy Genius Report Lowers single-line unlimited plan to $69.99, but adds a slew of "3G capable" phones to the mandatory data charge (starting at $9.99), which includes the LG Chocolate Touch, VX8360 and enV3, Motorola Entice and Rival, plus the Nokia Twist. The Samsung Rogue and Alias2 are also included in this group. Family plan and Prepaid changes are being made as well. BGR has screen shots of the new plan information and a comparison chart with the other big three.
Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.5 (Microsoft Windows; Windows CE; Opera Mobi/9.5; U; en) 480x800 SAMSUNG SCH-i920 PPC) Forcing data on dumb phones is just that "dumb". Mike, did you happen to order a new phone yet?
I did. I ordered the Chocolate Touch. I was told even if I get it next week (as there is a shipping delay due to low inventory), I will not have to get the $9.95 minimum data plan because I ordered it before the implementation of this plan. If they rep was wrong and I am forced onto a data plan, then the new phone goes back and I continue using the Voyager.
...to bad they didnt drop the price of data and/or txting... then we'd be really talking. in response, att also dropped their voice plan rates: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/ATT-Announces-New-Unlimited-prnews-1139458748.html?x=0 price wars = good for consumers 0.20$ txt messages = ::insert profanity here::
We're lucky they didn't raise data charges considering all the complaining going on at AT&T about the data hogs and that there should be "tiered" data pricing. At least, in Verizon's case, they offer two data pricing packages. I would not be thrilled stuck with a $30 mandatory add-on with the Chocolate Touch (which I just received). I could live with the extra $10 fee if I had to.
Well, they never forced me to add the data plan but I'm returning the Chocolate Touch anyway. That phone is way too easy to press buttons which charge data. The Choco Touch is a beautiful phone, but I don't want to be tied to Verizon for another two years with the way they're going. Besides I missed the Voyager. Once the return is finalized, I get my contract reset and my NE2 discount back.
I was comparing the old and new plans in depth the other day and I realized not much has really changed (for me at least). It seems that VZW made it cheaper for the heavy voice users and kept it the same for all the people on the lower end of the wireless need spectrum, but at the same time over the middle guys. Middle guy being the person who wants a newer "3G Multimedia Phone" but doesn't need/want data. In some regards I think it's actually a smart move on VZW; When I first got my SCH-u710 (aka alias) I didn't think I'd need data, but added it anyhow just to play around with it thinking I'd just drop it later...but then I got hooked on having the internet in my pocket.... from there the rest is smart phone history. It's a good ploy to get the middle ground users feet wet in wireless internet....
Yup. a good ploy. But it pisses of family plan people like me who will be shafted with $230 a month out of my pocket. My daughter is in middle school and texting is her world! I do not want her on the internet and I will not pay the $10! I also don't want to stick her with one of the 4 or 5 crappy phones that she can get that don't require this ridiculous charge. I have already told Verizon we will be porting our lines out over this. It looks like Sprint or At&t for us.
While I don't really have a problem with the data requirement, since I believe the market should determine such things. If enough people complain and/or leave Verizon, they'll adjust accordingly. I do think that charging $10 for 25MB is ridiculous when you can get unlimited for $30, which of course is the point.
It makes perfect sense to me. I use enough data to make the $10 package pay for itself but not enough to equal $30. Saving $20/month, for the year, well, is enough for me to eat for a month.
One of the larger peeves I have with this concept is what they are charging for the $10. Sure $10 for "most" is not alot. Although, 25mb's for $10 is horrendous. That reminds me what one would have paid in the 1980's. I know though many may not care, I choose not to pay this nor will I ever. Just stating how I feel about it.
Do you thinking people would be less annoyed if the 25megs were cheaper? ...what do you think a fair price would be?. For me 30$ for unlimited data is totally worth it...and trust me, i get my moneys worth. :browani:
