Verizon Wireless Expands Wireless Broadband Network in Connecticut
Wednesday November 7, 9:00 am ET
High-Speed Network Enhancement Gives More Connecticut Customers Access to Fast Wireless Internet, E-mail, Mobile Music and Videos Just In Time For Holiday Debut of 2007's Hottest Handsets

WALLINGFORD, Conn., Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless, the leading wireless company with the nation's most reliable voice and data network, today announced the expansion of wide-area wireless broadband service to ten towns within Connecticut's Windham County.

Verizon Wireless customers in Windham County can now access e-mail, corporate data, the Internet and more at faster speeds, check out video on their phones, download music directly to their handsets and play 3D games through a recent enhancement to 15 existing cell sites. The company's wireless broadband network allows customers to access e-mail on their laptops and PDAs, and V CAST Video and Music on their wireless phones.

The high-speed wireless network enhancements occurred in 15 sites covering parts of the following ten Windham County communities: Brooklyn, Danielson, Eastford, Hampton, Killingly, Plainfield, Pomfret, Putnam, Scotland and Westford.

The network improvements were completed just prior to Verizon Wireless' unveiling of several new phones that will be available during the 2007 holiday season: the Verizon Wireless Juke by Samsung, the BlackBerry® Pearl(TM), The Venus(TM) by LG and The Voyager(TM) by LG. The Juke is already available in stores while the Pearl will be available on November 8th and the Venus and Voyager are expected to arrive in Connecticut before Thanksgiving.

"Our holiday lineup is stocked with best-in-class multimedia phones, all running on the nation's most reliable wireless network," said Ken Dixon, president of Verizon Wireless New England. "This latest network investment in Connecticut further empowers residents and visitors to leverage our high-speed wireless network for both work and leisure."

Verizon Wireless' high-speed wireless service, which powers its V CAST multimedia and BroadbandAccess internet applications, is based on the company's Evolution Data Optimized (EV-DO) Revision A network technology.

    BroadbandAccess

The company's flagship data service, BroadbandAccess, provides average download speeds of 600 kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 megabits and average upload speeds of 500-800 kbps, which means customers can download a 1 Megabyte e-mail attachment - the equivalent of a small PowerPoint® presentation or a large PDF file - in about eight seconds and upload the same-sized file in less than 13 seconds. Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess service allows customers to download files approximately 10 times faster than customers of other wireless service providers that use different broadly deployed network technologies.

    V CAST: Video and Music

The company's high-speed network also enables its V CAST multimedia services, offering customers the ability to download full song tracks, play cutting-edge 3D games, and stream video clips straight to their phones. With content updated daily, customers can watch dozens of on-demand videos, including breaking news, weather, sports highlights, and the hottest entertainment clips.

With V CAST Music, Verizon Wireless has built a massive full-song mobile music store that contains more than 2.1 million songs from well-known and independent artists that customers can download over-the-air, right onto their V CAST Music-enabled phones.

Verizon Wireless invested $145 million during the first six months of the year to enhance wireless capacity and coverage throughout the six states of New England, elevating the cumulative network investment in the region to more than $2 billion since 2000. Nationally the company invests more than $1 billion every 90 days to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless voice and data services. The company's ongoing network investment now totals more than $40 billion nationally over the past seven years.

Nationally, these test men and women drive nearly 100 specially equipped vehicles almost 1,000,000 miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways as well as major roads and surface streets in high-population areas, based upon U.S. Census counts, to confirm that voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected.
