I will answer my own post. I use VZNavigator on my LG enV (VX-9900,) and I really like it. I am also a long-time AAA member, so I was interested in the extra features that the AAA program offers. I specifically liked the feature described as The AAA Mobile application appears in my phone's "Get It Now" section. However, there is no trial available. The only option is $9.95 per month for service. According to the Verizon website, both VZNavigator and AAA Mobile are produced by Networks In Motion. So, I called Verizon Wireless Data Tech Support. The rep tried to be helpful, but she admitted she didn't know the differences between the two programs. She suggested a trial. When I explained there was no free trial available for AAA Mobile, she credited my account $9.95 to offset one months use of AAA Mobile. So, I installed AAA Mobile. I liked the fact that the program asked me for my AAA member number, so they would know who was making an emergency request. The menus and general appearance of AAA Mobile was very similiar to VZNavigator. One feature (and a very important one to me) that is missing from AAA Mobile is a website where I can manage my "Favorite Places." Before I go on a trip, I go the VZNavigator site via my desktop computer, and add places that I know that I will be visiting. Then, I synch those places with the application on my phone. AAA Mobile doesn't (yet?) offer that feature. Then, I went on a "test hop" using AAA Mobile. The voice directions, maps, and prompts sound and appear exactly the same as VZNavigator. I have an installed Bluetooth speaker kit in my car that enables my enV to use the Bluetooth kit's speakers. VZNavigator's voice prompts are loud and clear using those speakers. However, AAA Mobile doesn't deliver its voice prompts over the Bluetooth kit. I found that very surprising since everything else in the two programs seems so alike. Bottom line, I will be keeping VZNavigator and cancelling the AAA Mobile application. The Bluetooth speaker use and web synchronization are far more important to me than being able to wirelessly notify AAA of my location.
I don't get it. Why would anyone pay 10 bucks a month when they could spend as little as $200.00 on a GPS?
I have had dedicated (Garmin and Magellan) GPS units in the past, and paid more than $120 per year to purchase updated maps for them. With VZNavigator, I have the most up-to-date maps without having to buy CDs, etc. To read about all the problems I had with a GPS from Magellan, and that company's poor warranty service, take a look HERE.
Wirelessly posted (Samsung u540: SCH-U540/1.0 NetFront/3.0.22.2.5 (GUI) MMP/2.0) It would be nice if this were free for AAA subscribers.
Verizon is not going to give anything away. Why would they if they can charge for it? Of course if people don't like the price of all these add on services they can vote with their feet. I am not buying this service. You can Join in its your call!
Wirelessly posted (Samsung u540: SCH-U540/1.0 NetFront/3.0.22.2.5 (GUI) MMP/2.0) I realize they don't give anything away. I have no intention of paying for that service.
Just tried to get directions form my home to my office. It kept failing to process my request. Useless. I'll stick to Google.
