My buddy needs to upgrade his old TDMA Nokia 3161 to a new Cingular GSM phone or jump ship to Verizon. I've been with Verizon forever, so I'm a little biased! I know when the newer GSM was rolled out, they had many reception issues. Has that been taken care of? He lives in Broomall, PA, a famous bad reception area for everyone, due to the township not letting carriers install towers. Does anyone know how GSM works in this area and the Phila. area/suburbs vs. Verizon? He also travels a lot across the country, so national coverage is important.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
I live in Center City, Philly and and work in South Jersey. GSM coverage in Center City is great, from the NorthEast to South Philly. I have never had problem with signal in the City. However, there are certain spots on the outskirts of the city that are notorious for bad reception. The Balacynwood area is one of them. Though I most be honest, I am not too sure about the Broomall area. I only occationally travel out there to visit friends once in a blue moon. I don't remember having any problems then. Verizon, Cingular and T-mobile seem to be the more popular carriers here. Other than your regular inconveniences of dropped calls every now and then, all three companies have pretty good signal here in Philadelphia. Hope that helps.

Delaware County has issues with both carriers.
