Verizon Wireless Tops Mobile Download Ease-of-use Study Evaluating the mobile game download process of leading US network providers in a recently released Portal Evaluation report series, the Strategy Analytics Wireless Media Lab concludes that Verizon Wireless offers the best game download experience, beating offerings from AT&T/Cingular, Helio and Sprint. As described in the report, participants from Strategy Analytics' user panel managed to discover the game download area in the fastest time, purchase a game in the least amount of clicks, and showed the highest levels of satisfaction when using the Verizon Wireless service. "Participants showed the most dissatisfaction with the AT&T/Cingular service," commented Paul Brown, User Experience Analyst at Strategy Analytics. "On average it took users three times as many clicks to access the games store using the AT&T/Cingular service compared to Verizon Wireless." David Kerr, Vice President of the Global Wireless Practice, added, "While the estimated US revenue from mobile gaming is projected to be over $520 Million in 2007, operators are missing out on over $100 Million in revenue as a result of inferior usability. Improvements to the purchase process from content discovery and preview to billing are required." Other findings from the report include: Cingular received the lowest rating across all four categories: Ease of Task Completion, Process Logic, Time Taken and Ease of Task Duplication. Verizon Wireless topped user satisfaction ratings with a score of 91/100. Verizon Wireless Tops Mobile Download Ease-of-use Study
I'm not a big fan of spending lots of money on GIN apps, but Big Red makes the process very simple. Just a couple of clicks coupled with an EVDO network makes it fast. I will admit that even though I didn't like the red bars, the UI was so easy to use to the point where I'd memorize key clicks to find what I want. Each new phone was similar so they were not too hard to master. The phones that had the Adobe Flash UI were even better for me. When I wanted to check my Yahoo email, it was always: up arrow, 3+3 and there I was. To delete a contact, it was just option + delete. I think the vividly colored screen layouts visible when browsing full length music tracks and games makes the experience easier too. I just cannot get used to the slow clunky Motorola UI on my at&t phone(s). I've been trying with the (slightly faster) v3xx, and the (very slow) KRZR K1. I think once at&t starts branding their newer phones with a customized UI, the purchasing experience may improve. They need more color and bolder fonts. Please get rid of that nasty orange! Blue is much easier on the eyes. They should also not make you click on the item you wish to download 2 or 3 times. Users should be allowed to preview any ringtones they wish to purchase. Expanded 3G service will make things much faster too. If I'm not mistaken, at&t's customized UI will be an overlay of the manufacturer UI as opposed to a complete replacement similar to Sprint's.
