I live in North Texas (Dallas) and am thinking of jumping ship to cingular or T-mobile. Does anyone know why JD power ranks Cingular so low? I really use my phone as a phone. I rarely take pictures, I almost never text mesage and may use an MP3 every once in a while. I (really) like gadgets but I need a reliable phone that has very good reception. Is there a good source for info just about phone quality and coverage? CNET seems to lump all the extras into their ratings. Thanks for any help you can offer. Should I post this thread in the Tmobile forum?
Hi there, First of all, nobody on here will be able to give you a definite answer of who has the best service. Is there a specific reason why you are looking at Cingular or T-Mobile only and not Sprint? All carriers have a trial period and I would take advantage of that, if you decide you don't like the service, cancel it within the trial period, if you decide to keep it, port your Verizon number over. All carriers have street level coverage maps on their websites, although I have found Cingular's coverage maps to be VERY optimistic. ~Andy
The reason why Cingular is ranked low in JD is because all JD surveys are biased. They poll the same people each year.
I agree with Andy, try Cingular, T-Mobile & Sprint to see which works best for you. Use the phone everywhere you would use it to get the best feel for coverage. As for the studies, there are a lot of theories on why but no one confirmed answer. It does seem they poll the same people each time & that can skew the data.
This is a false statement. I would be very interested in seeing any proof that people have on this subject, but until then, it remains a therory just as Fire pointed it out to be. There is no better test of coverage than the one you do yourself by using the carriers trial period. If you are considering Cingular first, I would advise that you don't let yourself become influenced by any of those JD Powers or Consumer Report studies that you read about. I've used Cingular before, and their customer service was always great for me. Their regular EDGE Coverage area is fine, but 3G service still needs improvement. If Cingular doesn't work out, you can always try TMobile or Sprint's trial period.
Thanks for all the advice. In response to the repsonses, I am considering Cingular and T-mobile based on the recommendations of a couple people. I am a little short on time, so I am trying to get it right the first time. Trial and error seems to be consistently recommended, so that's what I'll do. I am leaving Verizon because they have been pathetic every time I have called with a question, problem or concern. It wasn't really what they said but the insulting way in which they said it. Enough of the soapbox, Thanks again for the advice.
Just remeber teh tiral period time frame. Cingular is 30 days and T mobile, I beleive, is at 14 days. Good luck with your choice and pelase let us know which one you end up with.
JD rated them so low because of many things...costemer satisfaction, coverage, and sound quality off the top of my head in my experiences you should sitck with verizon trust me!
Not trying to start anything here, but the majority of people here will agree with me I think when I say this. What works for 1 doesn't always work for another, especially when it comes to cell phones & service, so if the OP doesn't try the other carriers they wouldn't know & would just take the advise of a poster adding something like this, with no facts to back it up. You can't go just by the survey's since there are many factors involved, and yes you may be right for where the OP lives, works & travels but the OP may find another carrier works better for them in the same places.
I agree and I think that is what every one has stated above. as to teh survey I will leave as you said as it already has it own long thread.
