This ups the ante for everyone on the fence about the VX9800! http://www.mobiletracker.net/archives/2005/12/02/verizon-wireless-mediaflo Verizon Wireless to broadcast TV Dec 02 2005 - 02:55 AM ET | Data, Verizon Wireless Verizon Wireless and Qualcomm yesterday announced an agreement that will bring live US TV content to Verizon Wireless subscribers. Qualcomm's $800 million MediaFLO network will be used for distribution. The network is expected to launch late next year and will provide service in about half of the markets already covered by Verizon's EV-DO network. “Using the MediaFLO technology and network, Verizon Wireless will be able to offer its customers a real-time TV-like experience on their wireless phones unlike anything available on the market today,” said Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, CEO, Qualcomm Through V Cast, Verizon Wireless subscribers already have access to selected on-demand TV content. I also saw a really interesting article in Time about streaming to iPods and what that means for TV advertisers - basically that it was more profitable now for a show to have a core audience that will pay to see a show when it wants to than a broad "free" weekly audience. Maybe Arrested Development will be back sooner than we thought!
MediaFLO operates on the 700mhz band - last time I checked, the VX9800 (or "The V", as it's simply known now) doesn't have a radio that can receive at that frequency. VZW isn't known for their backward compatibility. For instance, even though everyone who has activated a phone lately has aGPS on their phone, only NEW phones (starting, I believe, with the RAZR and the V325) will have the VZWNavigator driving directions function. Long story short - if you're going to want live TV over MediaFLO, save up for a new phone.
