Does anyone have experience with poor Verizon servicein the Charleston and Mt. Pleasant SC area? My wife and her sister are visiting there and her Verizon Moto Razr is almost unusable while her sister's Cingular service is fine. The Razr has difficulty making calls and doesn't seem to receive them either, with the incoming call usually going straight to voicemail and no voice mail notifications come through to her phone. I did a *228 Roaming update before she left on her trip so that shouldn't be a problem. Thx, Brad
Here's an update to my previous post and another question: The problem seems to have been related to the phone's being set on "Home" under Network settings which is odd since we didn't know how to do that in the first place. But my question is: Verizon said to set the phone to Automatic B which we did and it worked. However experimenting found that Automatic A also worked. What's is the difference and which one is correct? Thanks for any input here... Brad
This Network setting only comes into effect when the PRL (preferred roaming list) in your handset has been searched, without finding the SID (System IDentifier) of a wireless network your handset can hear and your provider wants you to use. Of course, all the VZW SIDs are at the top of the lists for each region. Then comes Sprint (recently) or Alltel (often). Maybe someone local like Hargray Wireless in Beaufort and Hilton Head, SC. Now the HOME setting only permits operation when the SID received matches the SID programmed as HOME in the handset. I take it this is the first trip away from HOME with this phone. This setting makes ROAMING impossible, and is a good choice near a national border (change handset SID to match local SID) to avoid foreign roaming. Keep reading here, there's many interesting details. COtech
Thanks all. It worked on both A and B but I guess B is where it needs to be set to. Still wondering how it got set on Home anyway. Perhaps it's been that way for a while.
With the newer America's Choice No Roaming Plans it does not matter whether you set your phone to Automatic A or Automatic B as the phone's signal acquiring is handled completely by the PRL.
Yup. I always thought Verizon stunk in the carolina's. Too much Alltel roaming, who I thought had poor service as well. Even though Cingular is PCS in the Carolina's, I never had a problem with them ever in Myrtle Beach and middle of nowhere NC. My family in Myrtle Beach travel throughout the southeast, including Charleston weekly for chemo, and are with Cingular and very happy. Hopefully VZ improves.
Thanks. I've had similar experiences in upstate SC as well using my Verizon phones. Funny thing, the TMobile Sidekick that I've been using, seems to connect better in many of those areas even when they don't have native coverage. Naturally, as soon as I jump ship, they'll go out of business or something.
not sure which handset you're using, but I have vzw in charleston and it's flawless. better than Suncom (but who isn't,) better in my experience than cingular and better than Sprint. alltel is better in the rural areas. vzw is very good. if you're getting lousy coverage, i'd be sure your phone isn't stuck on home only like the op or an outdated prl
Thanks. It was on the wrong network setting - something got set to allow only local calls for some reason.
