Hi to all...we'll be traveling to the Atlantis in June, and my husband just got the Voyager phone. Verizon said that we would have service in the Bahamas, but I'm skeptical. I have always found that the best information comes from the people on the ground. I did a search of this website, but didn't find a current thread. Does anyone know? Many thanks!! AnnMarie - Freehold, NJ
I know AT&T works well down there. A friend of mine just went down there last year... Verizon is probably similar. -Jay
http://www.cdg.org/roaming/general_info/coverage_region.asp according to cdg. There is coverage in the bermuda, and us virgin islands. I would call verizon and see, as there may or may not be roaming agreements. This one of those cases were Quad band GSM just rules.
If you get a signal, you will likely pay roaming fees... Visit http://vzw.com/international for more fee information.
I know that Sprint is in Puerto Rico & USVI (SID 5142). I have Alltel, and roaming is free on them in the Caribbean. But would Verizon charge for roaming on Sprint there...
Verizon has free roaming on Claro in PR (I think)... Claro was formed when Verizon sold its wireless assets... I don't know whether Sprint's free or not there though.
Hey guys, thanks for all of the input. Verizon does have coverage in the USVI, as my boss went there in February and had coverage pretty much on the whole island. BUT (the dreaded BUT) there were roaming charges. Thanks for the links to the various websites too.....I'll pass on anything new I learn. AMP
LOL come here and I will take you on a little trip to Alltel GSM country where there is a pretty good sized population and then you can tell me this statement.
I was just looking at Verizon's PRL 50989, and there is a network in PR that is free roam: Not sure is this is available in the USVI as well. Priority 1 06047 PCS FRM Puerto Rico Telephone Company SCAN 725E 750E 775E BTA488E San Juan, PR Priority 2 06047 [D] FRM Puerto Rico Telephone Company CMA091B San Juan, PR CMA147B Ponce, PR CMA169B Mayaguez, PR CMA202B Arecibo, PR CMA204B Aguadilla, PR CMA723B Puerto Rico 1 - Rincon CMA724B Puerto Rico 2 - Adjuntas CMA725B Puerto Rico 3 - Ciales CMA726B Puerto Rico 4 - Aibonito CMA727B Puerto Rico 5 - Ceiba CMA728B Puerto Rico 6 - Vieques CMA729B Puerto Rico 7 - Culebra
roaming for Verizon customers in the bahamas is $1.29/min.............but the international coverage map is weird...couldnt get it to work
i'm looking more and from the looks of it there is no CDMA coverage.....you would have to rent a GSM phone from Verizon or buy a Pay as You Go phone while you're down there
I was able to get the VZW international page to work, and it is 1.29 a minute. Just for reference AT&T is 2.29 or 1.99 a minute (depending on rate plan) T-Mobile is 2.29 a minute and Sprint charges 2.29 a minute. So for anyone that says Verizon is not the best choice for anyone who travels internationally, depending on where you travel, that may not be the case, if you travel to countries that do have CDMA networks, it is usually much cheaper to use Verizon. If you have a dual band CDMA/GSM phone, the places where you do have to use a GSM network, the rates are usually the same as the other providers.
but is it cheaper bc their coverage is ineffective there? $1.29 sounds good, but could be bad if there is no coverge
Is all of this the same for the verizon wireless card for the PC?---ie where there is phone coverage the PC card will work as well?
My information or experience is 3 years old, but when we where at Altantis in the Bahamas, people kept coming up to us and saying 'Wow, you have service?'. They had Verizon and we had Cingular (ie ATT now). P.S. Just realized how old this thread is. Not sure why there are many answers about USVI, PR, etc , etc. They are all different. The OP was about Bahamas!
