When Verizon began selling a version of Apple's iPhone, analysts and industry experts alike expected that customers, weary of congestion on AT&T's network, the only carrier then selling the sleek device, would flee to Verizon in droves.

That has not quite happened, at least not yet.

On Friday, while reporting its quarterly earnings results, Verizon said it activated 2.3 million iPhones during the company's second quarter. That is a hefty figure, because the device has been available on Verizon for only a few months, but it paled in comparison to AT&T's iPhone activations for the same quarter. On Thursday, AT&T reported that it had activated 3.6 million iPhones on its network, and that nearly a quarter of them were for new customers to AT&T.

Verizon's earnings might also shed some light into the brewing rivalry between Apple and Google and both look to dominate the smartphone and tablet industry. Although Verizon continued to achieve sales from its catalog of Android and 4G devices, the company sold far fewer of those devices than they did iPhones. For the quarter, the company reported sales of 1.2 million LTE and Android devices, which includes tablets, smartphones and wireless modems.

"Verizon's had Android for a long time" said Mr. Sharma, who keeps a close eye on the industry. "This was the first real test between an iPhone and Android and consumers still gravitate towards the iPhone."

IMO, they would have sold even more iPhones if it was a world IP4, as expected the IP5 will be this Fall.
At least my VZ friends went Droid 2 for that reason.

Sent from my iPhone 4 with TapaTalk.

Aren't these analyst so dumb? Why were they expecting a massive exodus from AT&T to Verizon over the iPhone? Haven't they heard of wireless 2yr contracts? I know AT&T has network problems and all, but it's not that bad to make me pay the ETF and move to Verizon, especially now that their data plans are more expensive than AT&T.

Exactly. I am not sure why this seems to get lost on people. Now, if VZW had released a newer version of the iPhone ahead of AT&T, then sure, maybe there would have been much more movement toward VZW. But people are not usually going to switch carriers just to go buy the same phone.

I think the only ones that would switch are the ones that switched to AT&T for the iPhone and were disappointed with the coverage in their area.

There was certainly a lot of people talking about switching to Verizon and iirc there was even polls on this forum and others that seemed to point to the switch.
