I just got a new Verizon Razr v3m today and I am trying to connect it to my dell laptop through bluetooth. Now i got my laptop to detect my phone, but when it tries to connect i get an error saying "Unable to detect service."

Does anyone know why i am getting this error message? My phone is set on the "Find me" mode and my laptop detects it, i just can not connect to it. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I know why. It is called Verizon and their crippled UI. Verizon is preventing you from using that RAZR V3m to its full extent. That is a shame, an absolutel shame. The phone is capable of quite a bit with Bluetooth, but Verizon decided that you don't get to use that.

really?...well that is no fun. Is there anyway to bypass this? Can i transfer data with the usb adapter or does verizon block that as well?

While this is true, there is more to it than that. Verizon does cripple their phones, its not just the v3m, they did this to the E815, among others. The v3m isnt capable of all that much with bluetooth. Most bluetooth phones can share files between the two using two profiles, OBEX (object exchange) and OPP (object push profile). They typcially disable both of these profiles. However, lately, they havent even written the OPP into their phones. WHat that means is, even if u connectyed two phones thru bluetooth, you couldnt send (push) files from your v3m or e815 etc, to another phone. What we can do however is edit the seems (basically turn on what verizon turned off). For the v3m, we can turn back on the usb data transfer seem, so we can use the usb cable, and we can get bluetooth to work to exchange files, but ONLY thru MPT. I have found since u need the usb cable to start the process, if u dont have bluetooth dongle, it really isnt worth getting one. But if your comp has one built in, u can use it, but u still need the usb cable to change the phone's "seems". The E815 on the otherhand, can be edited to exchange files bewteen the computer and the phone.

As stated above, u can bypass this. What u will need is usb drivers to get ur phone to be recognized by windows xp, as xp doesnt have the correct drivers for the v3m. once u have those, u will need a usb cable. Then u will need to download 3 programs. BitPim, MSU (motorola software updater), and p2kseem (to chnage the seem files to allow use of the disabled features from verizon). You mightg wonder why they wopuld do this, but its simple. If they disable features people want to use, they must buy them from verizon. which means more money for them. All we are doing is chnaging the phone back into what it is SUPPOSED to be. This does void your warranty, and if u mess it up, you could brick your phone, turning it into nothing but a useless paperweight. If you want to learn more about it, let us know and we can get u on the right track.

Wow...thanks verizon. So let me get this right, if I go out and buy the usb cable from verizon I still wont be able to transfer my own songs to my phone? I wish I had known this before I had bought my new phone, I would have switched providers. I honestly do not feel comfortable changing anything on my phone that could mess it up in the end. Thanks for the help guys.

Yea, u would need to do a seem edit to get the usb to transfer ringtones, etc from your comp to your phone via MPT. You can transfer music fine, but to access the phones correct folders for ringtone,s u would have to do seem edits.

Cincy, not putting it on there is just as bad as putting it on there and crippling it, in my book.

I agree. Although I would say that crippling it for the monetary gain is worse than if their phone simply did not have the ability to perform certain functions. The problem is the majority of their customers dont care about modding their phones, or else we wouldnt be discussing this, haha.

Unfortunately, you are right. I don't think that most people mod their phones at all. They might purchase a ringtone or a wallpaper, but that is usually the extent of it. Learning what I have from various message boards, I am glad to know that I am able to do all kinds of stuff to my phone, to make it how I want it, not how they want it.

Is it that people don't want to mod them, or that they don't know about modding them?

Its probably 50/50. I didnt realize how much u could mod a phone til i got the v3m. My other phones were just for talking. But when it came out, i knew i wanted a cool phone and wanted my ownb ringtones as i had heard people have their own. Its really only once u know what u want that u realize there is this whole other world to phones haha. I dont know what the demographic is, but Id be willing to bet its like 75/25 in favor of people who dont need their phones as mp3 players, etc.

What are u trying to accomplish by having ur comp fiond ur phone. You should know that you wont be able to transfer files between ur comp and ur phone. The v3m doesnt have OBEX file transfer. The only good that seem edit will do is to use bluetooth to send files while in MPT. But to get it to connect, just open ur bluetooth places, add new devicew. Then turn ur phone on discovery mode, and have the comp search for devices available. And then u should be fine. its up to u if u wanna use a passcode.

No, u need to initiate the seearch from ur comp. Open bluetooth places on ur compouter, click add new device. it will ask if the device is ready, so turn ur phone on in discovery mode, hit search on ur computer, and it should find ur phone. u cant find ur computer from ur phone, gotta do it the other way

so, if I read this right, Verizon just said, "Well, this phone has features we want to keep away from our users?" It kinda reminds me of communism... I wouldn't think that would be a good way to get buisness, to shut your users out of phone features.

    Todd,

Yes, in a nutshell, u are right. It isnt a good way to do business IFFFF, people understand u did this. But the common consumer, when they realize they cant use their own programs to do this, they will just purchase what they need from verizon thinking there is no other way. From a monetary standpoint, Verizon is BRILLIANT. We are the minority here.

But generally, there are things they have plain shut off, and other things that they just didnt enable the phones to do. Quick examples.

Shut off - Ability to use Motorola Phone Tools to add your own ringtones, backup contacts, pics, etc. But we can turn these abilities back on via seem edits

Disabled permanantly - Use of bluetooth for anything other than bluetooth headset. They never even wrote bluetooth OBEX or OPP into their firmware, so we cant turn this on even if we want to. Bluetooth normally would allow u to receive a ringtone/pic from another phone. But if they disable this free transfer, they force the normal consumer to pay for thei Get It Now service, or PIX messaging to send pics, which all results in $$$.

At any rate, yes they are worng. But the make a ton of money. I think if there was NO WAY around it, I would be more upset.

So should I be able to connect to other phones with bluetooth with alltel v3m firmware? I haven't been able to, so i'm not sure it's supposed to work.

Benso, and Georgia...it works on the Alltel V3M firmware. What u need to do is, browse to a ringtone, or picture...select options, then copy or move (copy will keep the file on ur phone and place a copy to ur destination, where move will take it from ur phone and place it in the destination), and it will bring up two options. It will bring up transflash card, and bluetooth. Select bluetooth and pick ur bluetooth destination...if it isnt there, u can search for it, just make sure that u have it in discovery mode. Once it connects, it will transfer. Its tricky to find out if u hadnt ever done it, but thats how.

Okay, I just did that and it worked with my laptop, but I haven't been able to even connect to other phones with bluetooth, so I don't think I'd be able to send it to them, you know? I tried one last night that had supposedly connected to someone else's V3c, so I figured it should work.

Yea, but their phone NEEDS OPP as well. It probably only has OBEX. If u try sending/pushing a file from you OPP enabled phone to a phone that dopesnt have OPP, it will not go. And chances are if its a v3c, if it has bluetooth file transfer, it prolly only has OBEX.

Yeah, that makes sense. The guy that sent the thing before had a PDA with bluetooth, so I guess he couldn't sent it with that. He can't anymore, though, since it got stolen...

But yeah. I guess when I want to send my friends stuff from my phone, I'll just have to tell them that mine is better than theirs now. :p

    Thanks, Cincy.

Yes, is your provider Verizon? If so, you can install the Alltel firmware which contains all of this. It is a very risky and lengthy difficult process, but here is what everyone has been using -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/Monster1.htm

Before u try, post here what software version your razr has.

Your reception/signal will be fine. The reason your web doesnt work, is the same reason your get it now will not work, and the same reason your pix messaging will not work. You need to do all of the seem edits in the tutorial, as well as the MMS fixes, etc. If u never backed up the cdma_sec file as well as the 10.key from the /DMU folder, you will not have data services on EVDO. If u do all of the other fixes, and force the phone into 1x mode, you can get EVERYTHING working again.

As for bluetooth transfer, yes u can do that. Just pair it with your computer and hit "discover services" and it will find OBEX file transfer. This will let u access ur phones picture/audio/video folders. When trying to transfer between phones, first make sure the other phone has the capabillity (they should as u mentioned in PR most phones do). WHat u do is, browse to a file u want to send, go into options, select COPY, and then it will bring up bluetooth or transflash. Select bluetooth, and if the phone is listed there, select it. If it isnt, hit Search and put the other phone is discovery mode.

    Any questions, let me know.

i did bakcup all the files, except the ones in teh MDU folder and the 10key I never found them (or i was too desperate to flash? ) Anyways.. I dont really ,pic messages nor web browsing as for get it now Ill just let other people download crap and made them pass it to me throu buetooth :browani: so I guess Ill be fine. Anything else I should look into?
Is it a bright idea to delete the stock ringtones and useless pics i dont use? Ima be able to create my own backgrounds and ringtones and pass them to the phone using P2kCommander>?

Yea, if u dont pix message or mobile web, u are fine. people wont be able to send get it now stuff thru bluetooth though, anything taken from get it now is digitally signed to that specific phone. as for deleting stock tones and pics, that is fine, i did so myself. yes, u can still upload ur custom pics/ringtones thru p2kcommander.
