First post here...We live in north east PA - moved here in November, '05. Continued with Verizon as the service seemed good - 5 bars most of the time. It's been progressively getting worse, particularly since June. Service is off of a Cell One tower (we get roaming for free) and is strong BUT WE CONSTANTLY get "FCC message 35, welcome to Cellular One...your call can not be completed at this time" - over and over and over again, sometimes 7 or 8 times... and this is with 5 bars!! Then, when a call finally goes through, it gets dropped right around 5 minutes. We also receive our voice mails sometimes 24 hours later and then can't retrieve them (same FCC message) - once in a while it's "message 32" instead of 35. We've called Verizon and they've put us through to a couple of different levels of tech support - they act dumbfounded and are supposedly calling Cell One about it....any ideas out there? (we update our phones all the time and have had new software installed at Verizon too)
Probably overloaded mobile switching station. I think I have heard problems like this before on there network. You may want to talk to South Canaan Cellular AKA Cellular One of NE Pennsylvania If they can't spend the money to upgrade what needs to be fixed then they need VZW to buy them out. *228 won't help you here at all on this issue
Just canceled today. Term fees were waived. Techician said Cellular one can't handle the traffic. No immediate solution in sight. I had tons of dropped calls on the extended network. My area is Gouldsboro.
Thanks for the replies - I had a feeling that was the problem since it got worse where the vacation season started (more people here). We will switch to Cell One as a last resort - had Cell One years ago and couldn't wait to get rid of them and switch to Verizon. Until this problem, we've been very happy with them! I WAS surprised that the Verizon people seemed dumbfounded - obviously we're NOT the first ones to call about "message 35". As for digital/analog service, - it's always digital - although it does switch between "extended network" and "roam". To add to this whole picture, the regular service carrier in our community is Verizon! They even have a building here (in our community) and keep a car and a van here at all times...but we use Vonage....so much cheaper...
Sorry to hear that If Cell 1 of NE PA can't fix the call capcity in a reasonable time frame, they need VZW to buy them out. VZW could go in and build there own towers since they have a PCS license for that market. That would take a year or so to do if VZW went that route. Jones, that network is CDMA for about the past year or more. I think all towers transmit CDMA now. If Cell 1 of NE PA has not done much to improve the backend of the network then the call capcity is going to be about the same as analog since the switching station can't handle the calls.
The problem here is not with Verizon. It is with Cell one. Switching to either carrier won't help. Might want to look into a different carrier.
Give that man a Cee-Gar!!!! Assuming your are in Gouldsboro, not North East: I know that T-Mobile has good coverage all along the 380 corridor, and even into the Del. Gap. In the mid 90's (when I was still a running tower crews) I spent over two years in the region (between Allentown and Binghampton) building sites for Omnipoint (now owned by T-Mobile). They did a surprisingly good design in their Tier 1 build of what was considered a Tier 2/3 area.
Always pass I-380 Northbound from I-80 to I-81 Syracuse, NY and is Covered. T-Mobile has Built More Cell Sites in NY Metro Areas than Needed. But Since this is a Rural Area, it is always Best to Test other Carrier Service Inside Your House using the Trial Period.
We're right off of I84 - about 25 miles from the PA/NY/NJ line - had a visitor to our home who had T-Mobile - no service in our house at all. I'm going to ask others who live nearby for their suggestions. Pike County is one of the fastest growing areas in PA - seems like incredibly lousy business preactice by both Cell One and Verizon to not have upgraded already. This population growth has been ongoing since the 90's - it's not a secret! Guess they'll be losing more and more customers. As I stated in my first post - this problem became really bad in June - so maybe once the 'summer people' leave in September, it'll get tolerable again? I also mentioned that we've been using Vonage - their basic plan - comes to $17 a month for 500 minutes. Our Verizon contract is up in December. One partial solution is to switch to the unlimited Vonage (about $28 a monthw/tax) and cut way back on the Verizon plan - going back to only "car" use.
That is surprising (the lack of T-Mo coverage). The local site development/operations office in those days was in Moscow and the build covered I-84 all the way from Scranton to Middletown. There is a site close to the Orange Reg. Medical Center that was the last of the 'string' at that time. Closer to home, there was a site right off of 390 and another by the Spring Hill Airpark (Sterling, I think the site is called). You must be in a hole or something. Check out Cingular as well.
twstrchk, what's your zip code? Maybe Cingular is an option for you. They have native coverage along I-84 and it extends a bit beyond the corridor, but it seems a bit weak.
For now I guess all you can do is complain to both VZW and CellOne, maybe they will start to realize that an upgrade is necessary. By the time December rolls around and you are out of contract things have either gotten better or you can switch to a different carrier. This is not Verizon's fault but rather CellOne for not upgrading their network.
Cellone of NEPA has just upgraded their switch lines and you should not be getting the message SCC 35 anymore. If you are a Cellone customer you need to call them and let them know you are getting that message to further troubleshoot the problem. If you are a Verizon customer contact Verizon Wireless support to have then trouble shoot the problem and they will contact Cellone. I have CellularOne and have not had any problems.
Re:update: Verizon Problems off of Cell One tower, northeast PA Three days ago we contacted Verizon and got a work order- they were going to contact Cell One with our connection problem. The past two days we've noticed a definite improvement - an occasional "FCC message 35 welcome to Cell One, your call can not be completed at this time" but not 8 or 9 times in a row like before. Verizon just called - Cell One admitted a problem and have added 9 trunk lines to the tower nearby - within the past two days. Time will tell - but it is better.
Re: update: Verizon Problems off of Cell One tower, northeast PA Wow, adding 9 Trunk Lines in 2 days, that's impressive to say the least. I do hope this does solve your issues out there.
They have been working on it for 2 months now. The increase in tourisum and population in this area has nearly doubled since last year. One of the main factors is there are several camps in this area and you know what happens when you but a couple thousand teens with cell phones in one area.
(smacking myself in the forehead) Of course! Hadn't thought about the camps - just the vacationers... I had even mentioned to my husband that our daughter attended cheerleading camp nearby a few years ago!:O After going through all the gobbledeegook with Verizon about rebooting our phones, updating them, signal strength, etc - what made the big difference was playing a recording of the Cell One message #35 we'd been getting over and over again - also the fact that a few times while they were talking to us, the calls were dropped and they ended up having to call our land line...then they took our complaint and ran with it.....hopefully not into a wall....
We have a summer place in Gouldsboro (Eagle lake). Up untill this summer Verizon worked great there. Now i can't even make a phone call. It is eather call drops after less than a minute or phone shows no service. I called Verizon and they gave me bunch of BS about service not guaranteed and that there are no plans for improvments in that area.
Cellularone of NEPA does not have towers near Gouldsboro. I believe that is monroe county and that should be Verizion or another carrier. I would have them look into more.
Goudsboro actually is just inside the corner of Wayne County across the line from Monroe and Lackawana Counties.
evidently Verizon has a "partnership" with Cell One - and CO wasn't holding up its end of the contract - weren't about to do anything about it until pushed...were forced to add more lines.. Our service is still much better (4 days later)- no dropped calls, no FCC messages....and this was true all weekend - usually the worst time to try and get a call out......I am remarkably impressed....(while knocking on wood)
The Closest tower to Goldsboro is over 5 miles away and do not think that tower will be usable in that area due to terrain.
Well, amazing. I just resigned with Verizon and yes, no more dropped calls. Just 4 weeks ago it was a nightmare. Cell one must have upgraded. I do live in Gouldsboro, Big Bass lake to be exact.
