I called verizon today to try to switch back to my old V112 phone. They said they dont support it because it doesnt do 1900 cdma. they used to but not anymore, even though its a verizon phone. Anyone know if this is right? And why?
They should still support it on local plans. Last I heard the restriction for requiring a phone with 1900 MHz only applied to the AC and NSR plans. It is possible they are changing though, as Verizon has begun to overlay 1900MHz in areas that used to be exclusively 800.
i had a similar problem with Sprint once - it actually had more to do with the plan i had and its features which wasn't available for the older phones for whatever network / band reason...
When I was really having problems with my 120c (last month), I asked if I could go back to my dualmode Sony. Thaey said fine, since I am only on the NE plan and not the AC plan...
why would they make such a bad desition to overlay 1900 ? are they getting rid of the 800...i hope not.
Why is an overlay of 1900 bad? For example, Verizon just acquired PCS licenses here in Columbus. Now they can supplement their 800 coverage with 1900. They can just add the 1900 to their existing towers or stick them up elsewhere. It will help with capacity issues and they could probably also chose to split voice and data so they have their own frequencies. There are no plans to eliminate 800 in markets where Verizon has it.
They aren't getting rid of 800, but according to the store manager here, while converting their entire network to digital (which they are doing), some areas are only going to have 1900, he didnt know why. He was basically under the impression that the higher mhz the better and didnt appreciate me telling him that he was not necessairly correct. i just think its dumb not to let customers use only 800mhz, as they have been for years.
Well in Florida, most of Texas, and in Wisconsin Verizon has always been 1900MHz. So those Verizon customers have not been using 800 at all. If Verizon doesn't have the proper licenses to put 800MHz up everywhere then there is no way for them to do it whether they want to or not. And that manager is a fool to think 1900 is better than 800 though.
matt- does it make sense to you that they arent allowing the use of dual-mode phones? if some areas have always been 1900mhz there seems to be just no reason not to allow the use of a phone without 1900 if they have let you use them as little as 6 months ago?
No, it makes no sense unless they are overlaying 1900 in your calling area. Even then, you could argue that you don't care to use the 1900 towers as the 800mhz ones work just fine. I think it is just a part of Verizon's overall effort to apparently get everyone onto dual-band phones (800 and 1900MHz CDMA) since they also don't seem to care about analog anymore.
