You hit the nail on the head with your rant, bobolito. Verizon has taken their content crippling over board and done too much. The sad thing is that their marketing department has turned this crippling and restricting users from doing things into the fact that it is cool to download videos, songs and ringtones from Get it Now and VCast stores. It's really bizarre how Verizon gets away with it. I have friends who thought the same thing until I filled them in to a few things and now VZW does not make a single penny off them anymore. ;)

And that's what I like about AT&T, I can make calls anywhere I go & can add ringtones, wallpapers & even change phones when I want, I think more people do care about changing these things, especially as the younger generation gets these phones & it's sad they do this.

I would say the same about AT&T if they crippled the phones & wouldn't allow me to get an unlocked/unbranded phone to work, so I am not being biased mind you.

I am sure T-Mobile is the same way, so far I have been pleasently suprised with their coverage on my To-Go phone & will see how it works on my SC trip next month.

That is totally understandable. As you may have noticed, I have been considering and actually trying different options as to what I can do about my cell phone carrier. Nobody, in my area and in the area I travel to can come close to Verizon's voice coverage and quality, so I am deciding to stay with something that does what is most important to me, but at the same time something that annoys me and gets me frustrated, because I do like my own custom ringtones and wallpapers. I wish I could have it all, but at least for now, I stay with what is most important...making and receving calls.

I agree Andy with you, I can tell without a doubt the difference between carriers in different parts of the country from here & know you pretty much have a limited choice for carriers. So don't get me wrong, if you had better coverage from AT&T or T-Mobile, I am sure you would use them for these abilities.

It is amazing how much different they are in different parts of this country & I like adding my ringtones & wallpapers ect... and happen to be lucky with decent coverage from AT&T.

If you don't have good voice calling, the phone is really a paperweight & you might as well dump money in the garbage.

Isn't it nice when we totally understand each other and agree on something, Tom? :D

I would love to ditch Verizon and go with a carrier that allows me to do more, but I have tried, and they just don't cut it, voice quality and coverage wise, so, yeah, I am pretty much stuck. At least most people here also use Verizon so M2M is really beneficial, so is the Unlimited IN Texting, so I feel like I at least have something, lol.

Yes it is, scary but nice. :lmao: Jk

Since I don't talk to anyone here on the phone, I don't have to worry about that & now that I have the Unlimited SMS, if I did text others I would be covered, but yes it would help & I am sure it takes a lot of worries off you on these 2 items.
Before the unlimited SMS, I almost never texted anyone, and I had to watch it with my daughters. Luckily I had unlimited incoming, so it was only half a worry. :p

Lol, sorry what I meant with "here" actually meant in Utah. :)
Unlimited Texting is a relief- I know my little sister is sometimes hard to keep track off with her not-unlimited text plan. :) We are switching to the Unlimited Text Family Plan, though, since we decided to stay with VZW and this would actually save us money every month.

Fire14, we're pretty much stuck with AT&T too. At least I am. Sprint/Nextel/T-Mobile just don't provide the coverage I need, but they are more liberal than Verizon when it comes to customizing your phone. Verizon has the coverage I need, but with AT&T we get the best of both worlds: coverage and freedom.

However, let's not forget that Nextel is just as bad as Verizon when it comes to customizing phones.

When the day comes that T-Mobile offers me similar coverage as AT&T, then I'll be able to say I have a choice of two carriers. ;)

What is the problem with switching phones with Verizon? I swap my phones out in 2 minutes all the time without a problem....Also, none of my phones are crippled. They all make and receive calls everywhere I go. I'll gladly pay for a few ringtones as long as Verizon continues to provide me with increased coverage, and great customer service.
I think what it really comes down to is what a person really wants their phones to do. For me, it's a phone that will make and receive calls every where I go, and one that will snap the perfect picture every time.

PS; I'm not being biased either. :D :p

Yes where I am is a little better then where you are, my nextel in most of that area was worst then here. And so far by me Sprint is better then I expected with only a few holes so far and T-Mobile is a little better, unfortunatly without the 850 roaming abilities both are handicaped, I am sure a full CDMA phone on Sprint would cover these area's.

I am working on getting a Verizon Demo phone to try them out to see if coverage improved by me & the Universtity. I am going to Pittstown on Sunday so I am going to see how Sprint (hybrid) and T-Mobile are between 78& Flemington.

And as for customizing phones, yes I love GSM phones. Can't wait to flash my new V3xx after a couple of months of use either.

Don't get me wrong, I know you can swap phones online with Verizon, but you are limited to which ones & that doesn't help & if your phones don't have crippled UI as people say then you modified them, which is good if you can, I know I enjoy doing it wilh my Moto's.

Yes it does come down to a phone that works & that is what I was getting at before, I also have that ability where I am with my service. I know you posted you basically tried every service where you live & seemed to be happy with all of them except for some minor issues, so you know which one you feel the most comfortable with & that's what it's about.

Just remember & I try to as well, not every carrier is right for everyone in many ways, not just ringtones & wallpapers.

Andy & I have been agreeing a lot lately too, & as you said it is scary but definitely nice, but then again I enjoyed the arguments too. They brought out the best in us :D

"Crippled" isn't the word that I would use for Verizon's "standard" UI menu, but to each his/her own...I do admit that before when I had Verizon I couldn't stand those red bars that were on every single phone that they sold, but fortunately Verizon has changed to a new flash UI on a few of their newer LG, Samsung, and Motorola handsets....I know that people have had great success in flashing their Verizon Motorola handsets with Alltel firmware, but I still have my E815 with the original Motorola UI on it.
The biggest problem with the phone swapping is going from an EV-DO capable handset to a non EV-DO capable handset, and vice versa...All 3 of my Verizon handsets are EV-DO capable so that problem really doesn't affect me.

I agree with you here.... And I will "try" to remember as well....... I wouldn't want anyone getting the impression that I was a Verizon fangirl. :D

So I did it, and it didn't work!

I changed the mp3 to a mid file, and sent it regular email. Got it as a qcp file.

What did I do wrong? Size of the file too big? (988 KB)

    Any new methods? Thanks

I appears I may be missing a lot more then I thought.

Again I can only go by what I hear from people on the crippled UI & other things like this thread is about, where they removed the ability to emailing Mp3 ringtones.
I also wonder why people have an issue with the signal bars being red? as long as they work & tell you that you do or do not have a signal does it matter?

  16. Ellen

    Ellen Guest

Those red bars are enough to give you a migraine headache after a while.
Fire14 have you ever used one of Verizon's handsets with the red bars on them for any length of time? ...... One of the things that I didn't like is the fact that the red bars take away from the wallpapers that you use on your handset. When I would apply my kids swim team picture as my wallpaper, the red bars clashed with it. At least now I have the option of either a light blue, or royal blue bars that won't stand out on the screen, or take away from the picture....

    Is that so?
Fire, it is not the signal bars that are red. There are two horizontal strips at the top and bottom that are red.

It does not matter to me at all, interestingly enough, of all the things that I complained about Verizon, in the 4 years, 7 months, and 1 day...:D, that I have had them, I have never had a problem with the red bars. I get the wallpaper sized right the bars are like a picture frame and make the picture stand out more.

Ofcourse when you are on the phone you don't see the bars anyway. :)

OK, I do know what your talking about now, I never did anything other then use them for calling or checking them out, I haven't had a Verizon phone for a few years now & didn't realize what everyone meant.
so now i am no longer confused & it makes perfect sense as to what everyone is talking about, glad I said something like my stupid comment to find out what really was going on.

That would drive me nuts as well & it must make using it a real pain & to me the screens are small enough, no need to make them smaller just to inprint your company's colors in someones brains.

Thanks Charlyee & MobilePrincess for clearing this up.

Fire, it is a perfectly legitimate assumption. Us VV's (Verizon Victims), keep refering to it as "red bars" & ofcourse "bars" signify the signal strength in our wireless world.

As I mentioned to you, it does not take up any useable space, what is irritating to some people is the color & that it cannot be changed. Verizon must have listened, the new ones are different. :)

If you want me to confuse you further with redundant information, just let me know & I will happy to oblige :lmao:

The whole content restriction thing is the exact reason why I will never go back to VZW. The service maybe one of the best but, I like to customize my phone, make and use my own ringtones and other things.

I have been sitting here trying different things. I tried changing the extension to mid and no luck. With both mp3 and mid, the emails kept coming back as undeliverable. One went thru and it had converted the mid file to qcp but the message said the qcp file was 1kb.

Anyways, I tried changing the extension to qcp. There again, most kept coming back as undeliverable. I have found that they always come back if I send only the sound file. I have to add a picture to the message to get it to go through and then most still come back as undeliverable. After sending the same messages over and over, finally, SUCCESS! The one that went through using the qcp extension is clear as a bell. Sounds MUCH better than mp3's that have been converted to qcp.

So, I have tried a couple more times. No luck again yet. I'll see if I can get it to work again. May have been just a fluke but I'll keep trying.

I really agree with you on this one you know Andy and I talk alot about these problems. It seems like every month there has been one thing after another they have taken away. Well as far as coverage and the ability to make and recieve calls has been wonderful never really a problem. But now that I am on Sprint like bobolito said it is great to have the freedom. So much that i use more texting than talking.

P.S. It is nice for once seeing most of us agreeing lol.

Can't you just connect to your PC via Verizon's USB dongle and hard transfer your files in?

There is a way to take your MP3 and make them your ringtones I have done it and it works perfectly. first you need to take the song and edit it down to the part you like makin sure once you save the file on your computer it doesn't exceed 480k. next up load it to your voyager via usb mass storage connection found in the tool menu. open the phone and save the new mp3 you want as a ringtone to the my sounds folder on your Voyager. next you will have to send the file from your my sounds folder on your Voyager to yourself via a pix/flix message when you recieve the message click the options button on the bottom right of the touch screen and it will give you the option of "save as a ringtone" and then it saves it to your Voyager as a ringtone being able to set it as a default tone or contact tone. if you have any questions you can email me at

You've got it right Andy...they're hitting us in the pocket book and the only way for us to fight back and make a difference is to hit them in the same place. The only question is how do we go about affecting that change? There are a few big companies that hold a monopoly over all cell phone service. Any ideas on where we begin?
