This is outstanding, I'm surprised it took so long and that other carriers haven't done it. What a great idea... From Mobile Tech News Bedminster, NJ & San Jose, Calif. -- Verizon Wireless and FusionOne announced today the availability of Backup Assistant(TM) in the Get It Now virtual store. Developed and hosted by FusionOne and available for download to Verizon Wireless Get It Now customers, Backup Assistant automatically safeguards customers' address books against phone loss, damage or theft, and eliminates the need to manually transfer contacts when a phone is replaced or upgraded. Verizon Wireless customers with select Get It Now-enabled phones can sign up for Backup Assistant and complete their first backup in a matter of minutes. Backup Assistant then performs secure backups automatically -- when the phone is not in use, on a schedule the user selects -- only connecting to the network if information in the address book has changed. Verizon Wireless Get It Now customers can find Backup Assistant in the getGOING shopping aisle in the Get It Now virtual store. Verizon Wireless customers with select Get It Now-enabled phones can download Backup Assistant for $1.99 monthly access. Once customers sign up for Backup Assistant they can also view, edit or print their mobile phone address books online by logging on to http://www.verizonwireless.com/backupassistant and entering their mobile number and security PIN code. Any changes made to the online address book will automatically synchronize back to the mobile phone address book in a matter of seconds. That is really a nice feature. I am thinking of subscribing, myself. BTW, if anyone has missed my presence at this forum, I have just come back from vacation; a trip from Washington to San Franscico. Really, a wonderful area.
I did Gamer, and Thank you. I suggest to anyone with the travel bug, San Fran, at least once, is a must.
Your welcome. Sorry for going off topic....but....My mom and dad have been to SF back in the early 80s before my sister and I were born, but my sister and I have never been there. Maybe someday when gas prices go down in price (yeah right!!) I will go to SF and rent a car and drive along the coast of California, Oregon, and Washington on 101.
iphonebook and idatebook are pretty cool Get it Now apps as well, I set a guy up with idatebook today, it's kind of sad to say, buy I would almost rather use that app than my i600, it makes any phone into a smartphone...it's not bad for $2.99 per month see more at idatebook.net
GSM carriers solved this problem a long time ago! It's called the SIM card! Just buy an inactive SIM somewhere and backup your numbers there since if you lose your phone your SIM will be lost as well. When you get a new phone, just copy what's in your backup SIM to the new phone and presto!
That's a good idea, I will have to work on getting an inactive SIM to do this, thanks for the suggestion.
Most people only change phones once every 2 years if that. Over two years that is $48. Might as well just buy software (or download free) and a data cable.
I guess I am not like most people. Within the last two years I've gone over 5 different phones. (V400, T616, LG4050, 6340i, 6590i 3595, etc.) But how do you calculate $48? What is that about? I don't get it. You can ask around and you may find someone with an inactive SIM you can get for free, or on Ebay they shouldn't be more than $10 used. I have like 5 SIM cards myself. One I got free because I did market relocation. Another one I got free again because my original one went bad. I got another one after my sister cancelled Cingular to go with AWS. I got another one again after my brother cancelled T-Mobile. So it is easy to get a free SIM somewhere. Even with a Nextel SIM card you can use it in your GSM phone to store numbers as backup.
The SIM is,of course , a great idea. However, I mostly use the free Nokia software, Nokia PC suite (see www.nokiausa.com and Support/PC Applications). It allows me to back up my phone book, edit it from my PC, send and manage SMS from the PC, saves my profiles, write my own music for the phone ringer. It available free for almost all of Nokia's phones. I used it when replacing phones from the old TDMA (non sim) to the 6340i (sim). It is also alot easier to add phone entries from the PC and then send them to the phone. It connects via Infrared, cable or bluetooth. I mostly use Infrared. I also found a cheap shareware for handling calendar/address entries between my phone/PDA/PC too.
I got the $48 because the post said Verizon would charge $2.00/mo for the service. Over a 2 year contract that is $48. So I am saying it's not the best deal for the "average" user. For someone that switches phones all the time, it might be a good thing. And I have gone through way more phones that that since June of 2003 (Sanyo 4900, Sanyo RL2000, Sanyo 8100, Sanyo 5500, Treo 600, Samsung A620, Nokia 3588i, Samsung A680, Samsung E105, Motorola V400, Motorola V600).
SIM cards are a great idea unless you happen to have, oh, I don't know, a CDMA handset, in which case a SIM card is about as useful as a brick, although much smaller.
Don't worry, CDMA guys copied the idea and should see RIUMs coming to a CDMA carrier near you. I just don't know when US carriers will adopt the idea.
[Original, incorrect post (see "Edit" below)]Okay, I give up... what does RUIM stand for? Run Under Idiot Man-children? Roof Up In Minutes? Rum Ucky In Mouth? Rover Up In Mars? Rocks Under Impressive Monolith? Rooster Ugly Indecent Monster? Rural Uncle Imbibes Moonshine? (that's my favorite, by the way.) Obviously the IM stands for "Identity Module," just like in SIM but I can't figure out what the hell RU is. Edit: Oops, I thought it was RUIM not RIUM... my bad. Unfortunatly the acronyms I've come up for RUIM are much funnier than those I came up with for RIUM so I'm going to leave those. I still don't know what RIUM stands for.
This app will not work currently with the Moto V710? that stinks! Available On These Phones LG VX4400 LG VX6000 LG VX4600 LG VX4500 LG VX7000 Kyocera KX414 Kyocera KX434 Kyocera SE47
That's okay for me, not only do I not have a v710 yet but I don't have service with Verizon... and I can't have service with Verizon because they don't cover The MHK.
Well, that's not nearly as fun as Rural Uncle Imbibes Moonshine but I admit, it makes more sense. Ah, and there you see is my mistake... I checked the WA glossory but not the forums. Silly, silly me. :googlyeye
A SIM ple error. Actually, I not sure why it is called RUIM, SIM cards are removable too! I guess just to make a distinction from the original (and better) SIM cards. Perhaps the R should stand for Retrofit, as in providing devices or equipment not in existence or available at the time of original manufacture.
Re: Verizon Is Brilliant! (he thought sarcastically) Sarcastically?, Here's why: Just bought the KX2, went to GetItNow to upload using Backupassistatn on my LG6000 (that broke), then went to GetItNow only to find the app called iPhonebook. iPhonebook does not transfer data from or to Backupassistant and Backupassistant does not transfer data to or from iPhonebook - the 2 apps are incompatible and Backupassistant is the new version not available for the newer KX2. Yes, Verizon is brilliant.
Re: Verizon Is Brilliant! (he thought sarcastically) Welcome to the wonderful world of GIN apps. What works for some...
