Since Verizon's official press release has yet to come out, here are a few details from reliable sources: Verizon To Offer iPhone 4 (Phone Scoop) The Verizon iPhone -- Engadget The phone is CDMA/EV-DO Rev. A, no LTE this go-round. 16GB version $199.99, 32 GB version $299.99. Slightly modified antenna design from AT&T version (though VZ's CDMA configuration likely helped there). No global capabilities. 3G mobile Hotspot for up to 5 devices (not available on the AT&T version, though available on other Verizon smartphones). According to Phonescoop, existing upgrade-eligible Verizon customers will have early access to purchase the phone. More details to come...
Here is the story from a few real news outlets: Wall Street Journal Verizon Wireless Unveils iPhone Plan - WSJ.com NY Times: http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/11/live-blogging-the-verizon-iphone-announcement/?ref=business
Glad they now have it, as it's an option finally, but I'm happy with my Droid X and will gladly wait for the next version (or so) with LTE on board.
I keep seeing these articles saying that they hope Verizon is up to the challenge of the influx of new iphone users. This isn't 2007 anymore. Tons of people already have smartphones on every network, which is something that was not the case in 2007. Sure, there are places that need network improvements (ahem, Verizon.....) but there is no chance we will see the same failures in major cities like we did with AT&T in 2007-2009.
Yeah I agree it's a lot different today than it was in 2007-2008. Networks have been beefed up to better handle the load.
The wait, anticipation and speculation is over. I had been waiting for the iphone for some time but I have to say that I'm satisfied with the droid pro. My wife might be upgrading.
And it starts!! Strong interest in the newly announced Verizon iPhone appears to have caused intermittent outages on the Verizon website Tuesday, resembling AT&T's iPhone 4 preorder woes from last year. Scattered reports of downtime on the Verizon Wireless website seem to indicate that pent up demand for the Verizon iPhone has overwhelmed the carrier's servers at times throughout the day. According to one AppleInsider reader, attempts to access the upgrade section of Verizon's website timed out or received the message: "Safari can’t open the page because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection. This sometimes occurs when the server is busy. Wait for a few minutes, and then try again." Several other readers have also reported being unable to access the Verizon website on Tuesday. Verizon announced the much-rumored and long-awaited CDMA iPhone earlier Tuesday at a press event in New York City. The carrier could experience an even greater surge in traffic when the device is available for preorder "on or around February 3rd," in advance of its official Feb. 10 release date. Verizon customers can sign up on the Verizon website to get the iPhone 4 before "they're available to everyone else." The largest wireless provider in the U.S. also revealed Tuesday that the CDMA iPhone 4 will allow Wi-Fi tethering of up to 5 devices through a built-in feature of a new version of Apple's iOS, called 4.2.5. By comparison, AT&T currently only allows BlueTooth or USB tethering of 1 device for an additional $20 per month. However, a new rumor says that GSM-iPhones could get the Wi-Fi hotspot feature in a future update to iOS. Verizon has published a frequently asked questions section on its website for customers interested in the iPhone 4. Last June, AT&T was forced to temporarily suspend iPhone 4 preorders after a ten-fold increase in demand from the previous year threatened to overwhelm the company's servers. AT&T saw record sales on the first day of preorders for the iPhone 4, before the site was overwhelmed by the traffic. Some AT&T stores resorted to using pen and paper to take preorders for the handset. Apple's own website and 800 number also experienced outages last year because of extraordinary demand for the iPhone 4
Since Verizon did not say that the CDMA iphone was an exclusive, what other carriers in what other countries, Canada and Mexico come to mind, would the CDMA iphone be compatible with? Will there be a couple extra frequencies tucked in there for Korea and Japan? I would think they would have to have Sprints PCS band in there for roaming. I searched CDMA Japan and it seems they use 800mhz, 1500, and 2100mhz. Korea uses 800 and 1700.
The CDMA Version, at least a US variant, has 1900 and 850 mhz CDMA. These are the bands used by other Sprint and Verizon. MetroPCS uses 1900 in some markets, but 1700 in others, so they can't use it. Canada and Mexico also use 1900/850mhz CDMA, as do some other countries. However, I believe all carriers in Canada already have the iPhone on their GSM networks. Not sure about Mexico.
Phonescoop says it will only have 850 and 1900. Strange, perhps that is so they can introduce a new phone, and sell more, later this year or next spring.
I find the timing hard to believe. Right after VZW customers can pre-order an iPhone, but before everyone else can? I'm 80/20--80% its some other smartphone or network/merger information; 20% Sprint iPhone.
Ahh, yes, very good. Sprint's last Palm announcement was timed right around an iPhone event and was possibly overshadowed then. I downgrade my iPhone prediction to zero. Sprint's invitation cites their innovation and an industry first. Hey! Maybe they got Qchat working!?
No, we all know that isn't happening. I give an iDen iPhone a higher change before Qchat working properly. haha, iDen iPhone.
