I have full insurance on my phone from verizon, the $5.99 a month or whatever it is, does that cover everything? like if i lose my phone i just go to a verizon store and get a brand new one? what if i broke/lost my phone and wanted a different phone than the 4400, could I just pay the difference between the two phones if there is any? (doubtful on that last one) thanks for the help

The insurance you speak of covers everything. But if your phone is lost you will have to get a police report, so Verizon knows the loss is legit. And you will recieve the same exact phone, unless Verizon dosn't sell the phone any more. You can't pay the difference between the phones to get a different one.

NoooooooooooooT! And you thought you knew!

First, the insurance program is not handled by Verizon but by Merimac!

Second, read the fine print! Whether it's the extended wwarrantry and/or the insurance program, Verizon and Merimac both make it clear that you MAY receive a refurbished phone.

Considering that there have been many returns on the 4400 and many others, there's a greater chance that you'll receive a refurbished!

This is why I find the whole insurance thing to be "distateful"! If I pay a $50 deductible, I better be guaranteed that I'm getting something new!

just cause the phone has been refurbished does not mean that there is anything wrong with it. I have one myself now and its works alot better than my new one.

If anything is wrong with your phone and it hasn't been that long since you first got it, you can always return it under the warranty and get another for free.

BTW, the police report is waived most of the time but $50 for another phone is seriously not worth it, under my standards. At least Sprint's insurance company charges $15 cheaper.

BTW2, when did Verizon change its insurance company from Asurion to Merimac?

Excellent point. Refurbs are often the phones cusotmers buy and then return during their initial 15 day trial for whatever reason. There is an added bonus to a refurbished phone as well: you know that phone has been checked over by a tech and should be thoroughly inspected and tested. This is not the case with new phones, where typically only a select few phones form a particular batch will be tested for widespread manufacturing defects.

    Alright,

I have used this insurance of Verizon's and YES, Verizon is not "in charge" of the insurance, Merimac OR Lockline are. Mine was covered by lockline...I do not know why these two are used instead of one...

Anyway, I have the middle of the three insurance plans. I broke my phone at the batting cages a few weeks agao, and I couldn't stand the flip monitor coming off...LOL...So, I called and made a claim, and it was covered...WOOHOO!!!

I, too, thought I would have to pay $50, but for some reason, I was only charged $35...I wasn't about to complain...Anyway, I figure the bulk of this goes toward shipping, since they ship it to you in 3 business days, AND a self addressed envelope will be included so that I can send my broken phone back...So, I feel $35 is reasonable...

I also asked if I was going to get a new or refurbished phone, and the rep told me new...Hmmmm...We'll see when I get it...Either way, I don't mind...as long as the damn ed thing works...

Well, that's about all I have to say about my experience with the insurance...Maybe Merimac charges more than lockline (???).

Oh yeah, I think they also cover the accessories that broke, too...cuz they asked, and I told them my case was torn...We'll see...I should have said my Jabra bluetooth broke, too...shucks...LOL

I had a Sony CDM1300 for 3.5 years. I accidentally ripped the # key off the keypad with my seatbelt.

They would only replace it with another CDM1300. For less than $50, I could buy a used one. So, I got a new 120c instead. Bad judgement in my case, wish I stayed with the Sony - Week before I got my 120c, I was at my friend's house. A car happened to drive by and a CDM1300 was tossed out the window, so I got an extra keypad...

Rafale - Thank you sooooooooo much for correcting me. [IMG][IMG]

When ever any one asks about phone insurance it is hard to give specifics unless you are in the same market, because the company the provider uses can be different from market to market. Also the deductible and the way they handle the clams can differ quite a bit from market to market, even with the same company. Like when I was in Oregon and had Verizon the best insurance you could get had a $35 deductable, in CA with Verizon the insurance I had didn't have a deductible. Also TarragonOxide mention that Sprint's deductible in NY is $35, but in SoCal it is $50. And I would take a 4400 refurbed for $50 that has been tested. It beats paying $300 to $350 for a new one. Or buying a used to slightly used one off of eBay for around $250, which you need to take someone's word that it works perfectly. But with Sprint the insurance isn't that great, because you can get a very good brand new phone for $100 to $200 out the door.

I have had vzw insurance for about 9 years. The coverage as I know it does not cover water damage. (the percentage of water damaged phones is whoa high!) if your phone is water damaged. lose it! call your local pd and get a report and then call the insurance co.

yes, it is true that a different ins. co. handles diff markets, and the deductable is diff in various markets. In mine it is $35, in others it is $50.
yes, you may get a re-manufactured phone, however, in those 9 years I have not recieved a one!

VZW insurance is a good thing to have! Everyone should have ins.
Some of the local authorized agents in my town have their own ins. programs and it is cheaper, covers anything (even water), gives you a loaner phone, and had no deductable! (ofcourse they require that you buy the phone from them.

    good luck!

I didn't know Verizon had multiple insurance companies.

I know the one I've been using for years, Asurion, does cover water damage. I bought a T720 in December 2002 for $180 I believe, 1 yr. contract, and dropped it in the snow around January. I didn't bother cleaning the contacts off, so it ended up becoming damaged when I wanted the phone updated to the 2dp software.

Asurion sent me a brand new phone in two days. If it wasn't for the insurance, I'd have ended up adding a year to my contract and paying another $180 for the phone or just paying full retail. That $50 deductible isn't always so bad.

There's been far more returns of the T720, and I have a brand new phone. In fact two because the first one I received had a dead pixel and this purplish hue at the key-pad which I just couldn't stand, so they sent me another new phone before I even mailed the first one back.

How do you all know whether the phone you got is new or refurbished? Is there some way to tell with Verizon? I know that with Sprint there is a way to tell if you have received a refurb. Even refurbished phones come in sealed packages with 0 minutes on the life timer, so I am just curious how you can tell on Verizon phones. Thanks!

When verizon gives you a refurbished phone, it is in a little brown box. All that is included is the phone. I went to verizon because my t720 was very messed up, and they tried to give me refurbished. THats when I got this 4400 amazing piece of equipment.

I'm sorta thinking that this insurance isn't really all that reasonable...I mean how often does the average person put in a claim? Once every two years?

    $4.99 X 24 = $120
add $50 deductible and that pretty hefty $170..and after year one even the more expensive models will likely be sellling for less than that...

I am in full agreement with you BarVybe. I posted somewhere else that in the 5-6 years I have used cell phones I have never lost or broken a phone. So at $4/mo for 5 years that would have been $240 already without a single claim. If I break or lose my phone or leave it somewhere that it can be stolen my "punishment" will be having to either go buy a cheaper phone as a replacement or heading over to eBay for an equally "cool" phone that isn't new.

OK...it IS insurance...What is the reason for insurance??? Those "just in case" scenarios...Why have insurance at all? I could've bought 4 Ferraris by now with the amount that I spent on my car insurance (I know it's the law, but same concept)...I could've had 3 triple bypasses with the amount that I have spent on my health insurance...Besides, is $4 REALLY going to kill you a month?
Have I gotten into accidents? NO. Have I had to go to the hospital in the past 10 years? NO. But I have the insurance just in case I do...

But it is your prerogatitive to purchase the insurance or not so...you make the call.

Also, I paid $35 instead of the $50 that was stated in the Verizon literature...I thought I would have to pay $50, but ended up paying $35...I have no idea how I got charged less...luck?

Well, that's my take on insurance.
    peace

You're right Vandit, all insurance is a safety net. But the difference is, if I wreck my car, and insurance was not mandated by law so I chose not to carry it, I would be out perhaps over 10 grand to replace the car plus any liability I might have towards anyone else involved in the accident if it was my fault. If I need surgery, again, without insurance, I am out tens of thousands of dollars, if not more. Yet if I lose my phone, I can get another one (might not be the same make and model or as fancy, but the same can be said of a new car after an old one is totaled) for $100, more or less. If I pay for 6 months of phone insurance + $50 deductible then I am out $75...so I save a whopping $25. If I need my phone replaced after 16 months I may have ended up paying a heck of a lot more over time than I needed to. Not to mention that I can afford to pay an unexpected expense of $100 for a new phone a lot more than I could pay, say $50,000 in unexpected medical bills if I didn't have health insurance.

Some insurance is worth it, some is not. Phone insurance is not. That's my take on it.

THats because your area requires 50 dollars. When you go to the verizon website you have to enter your area code, and I copied and pasted, so the 50 dollars is for my area. I forgot to say that.

I never said the phone was new. Then again, when you buy insurance, your replacement may not be a new phone either.
