Reply........... 1. The hands free issue: (Ear-bud)- Walk around with this thing in my ear. No thanks. Can you say, "would you like to biggie size that order?" Not to mention the little dangling wire that snagging every thing you walk by. (Built in speakerphone)- I like this feature. The only problem with a speaker phone is the background noise. Let me spell it out so I'm not accused of offering incomplete thoughts. Step 1. You place a call and turn on the built in speaker phone.--Step 2. The person you are talking to is in a noisy enviroment, your phone intreprets this noisy enviroment as a person speaking and transmits this noise to you. (as most of you know, speaker-phone conversations are not full-duplex and the person you are calling can not hear you. Step 3. You turn off the speaker-phone, placing the phone to your head so you can have a full-duplex conversation. Speaker phone works great only when both parties are in a quiet to semi-quite enviroment. Some will rebut with, hey dumba-- only use the speaker-phone in quiet enviroments. Well the problem is that I live in the real world with kids, a noisy work enviroment ..... All this brings me to one point. When I use Direct Connect and have the speaker on, I control the duplex regardless of most enviroments and the conversation flows as long as there's air to breathe. I believe the Direct Connect is a great thing to have, I simply wish that before someone is allowed to buy a Nextel, they were instructed proper phone etiquitte. Seems like a few bad apples have caused many to view Direct Connect as a bad thing. -~~-->As far as ear pieces I don't use those either...until I can either have the phone implanted in my head or a bluetooth headset is compact enough I'll stick to holding my phone. ---~~~~>As far as the Speaker phones go, some are better than others, the handspring Treo speaker phone is great...and one thing you generally don't have to worry about with CDMA providers is background noise, because cdma is optimized at the conversational frequency range of the human voice, which is why you generally do not hear background noise from people using CDMA. --~~~~~~~~->As far as the phone etiquitte...that's not really specific to any carrier...although PTT users will have to be more careful about the setting on their phones...But it all comes down to the person...for example...I was at a very nice restuarant with my wife on Valantines day, the baby was at the sitters, and of course I had my phone on, but on silent alert...just incase. Sitting at the table across from us were a very elegantly dressed couple enjoying dinner and their wine (one of those couples you look at and say wow they have got it together) Well about 30 minutes into our dinner, I here this loud Nokia ringer (you know the ones) I'm looking around for the source and low and behold it's the woman across from us. I'm expecting her to silence the ringer or answer the call (I know some nokias don't come with vibrating ringers..so I'm not too disturbed yet..) but instead of silencing the ringer she looks at the display of her phone for about another three rings trying to figure out who it is that's calling her...(each ring grating into my skin more and more...) When she finally answers it I expect the horror to be over....well it had just began...she is talking at about three times the volume of anyone in the place...she talks for about two minutes and then gives the phone to her companion...who very politely excused himself and went outside to finish his conversation...something that lady should have done to begin with. It really depends on the person as to how they choose to use wireless. 2. Direct Connect vs. Free Mobile to Mobile calling... whats the difference? Can't say to much about this except.........A lot of companies idea of mobile to mobile calling is limited by a small local calling area and the number of mobile to mobile minutes you can actually have. Read the fine print on mobile to mobile calling sometime. I know some one will probabally say that their mobile to mobile plan is unlimited no mater where I am. Well congrats. Because I haven't seen to many of those. -~~~~---->Sprint offers Unlimited mobile to mobile calling on their entire nationwide network. (Free on a two year agreement, or $5 on a one year) 2.(a.) Nextel coverage is limited and no roaming in this case is a bad thing cause you cant roam period.......I think the term was "Shoddy." ...Let's face it. No single cellular providers covers every acre of this great nation. I never stated or implied that coverage was offered everywhere. What I can say is Nextel covers 99.9% of the places I travel and I am happy so far. If you travel off the beaten path then and you want to use your cell phone then please don't get a Nextel. It's definately not for you!!! ~~~~~---->True no carrier offers nationwide blanketed coverage but most have compatible technology so that you will have the ability to Roam when you are not on your home carriers network....I contend that Nextel is being deceptive as offering NO Roaming as a positive, when in reality with them it is a negative, because you cannot roam at all. 3. To answer Beachbums flame...............Married 13 years and enjoy talking to her everyday. Your right about me being mentally regressed. I have 3 kids, 2 jobs, and as previously stated, been married 13 years. Hell, thats enough to make any man struggle to complete a thought! ~~~~---> Congrats (like I said I don't normally flame...it was in my mentally regressed head it just had to come out) I myself have been married three years, have one child and another on the way, one job, and one side business with three employees... 4. Call go through? Boblito answered this well with good ole-fashioned common sense. The only thing I want to point out is......How many times have you called someones cell phone and their phone never rings. You have know way of proving their phone actually recieved the call. Yeah, you can leave a voice mail and their phone should notify them of the message you left if a compatible digital signal is available. With Direct Connect, you press a button and when the phone emits a chirp, you know the call went through. Thats all I was trying to say. I quess some of the old timers don't like the beeps, burps and chirps. Maybe it causes their hearing-aides to go haywire or maybe it makes their pace-makers flutter. ~~~~---->With most cdma carriers if their phone is out of range or off you will go directly to voice mail or the message stating that they are not available...come carriers will also give you a special beep at the end of the ring so that you know they are on another call. The last carrier I worked for did this... 5. New Tool?........ Beachbum would have you believe that caller I.D., voice mail, silent alert, vol. control and ringers are concepts. Shame on you Beachbum.......I thought everyone knew that these are actually "features." Don't believe me. Just try calling your local provider and ask them if you can add a concept to your phone such as Voice mail. .....Hope my sarcasm brings you a chuckle! I should of called this a new toy instead of tool. I am a longtime fan of wireless phones. Wireless phones serve their purpose well but when it's all said and done they are just plain fun to use. Direct Connect is addictive, and very simple to use. I find myself in Direct Connect conversations with friends day in and day out and they get just as big a kick out of it as me. I hope my rambling didn't cause you to crack open the psychology book in search of a cure for me. ---~~~-> Since some of those "features" may seem like abstract concepts for some users I wanted to let you know we could explaing them to you if you needed help....Newtons Telecom Dictionary might be a good place to start. Your rebuttal please......... Steve ~~~----> By the way I enjoyed your comments....now as for Dandydons allegations we are acting childish, I believe that this forum is about the only place you can have such debates without any harm coming of it. Because if I ran into the local Nextel rep and had the same conversation with them one of us would most likely be in the hospital or jail afterwards. And if I stated the same thing to my prospects or customers I would loose their respect...each person has to make up their own mind what is right for them. Is Nextel better than Sprint?...Or Sprint is better than Verizon?...Or a string and two cups better than Cingular? Or a message in a bottle better than T-Mobile? and so on and so on...NO...It is all about what is best for the individual user....will I continue pointing out flaws and benefits in each system ...yes, that's what advice is all about.
I'll tell you this: The string and 2 cups have better sound quality than Cingular's TDMA network, but a little more echo
