I got sick of waiting... wanted new phones and wasn't under contract with Alltel. Went to Verizon, figured worst case I would just become a new Verizon customer. So, I picked out phones had everything setup and paid... then they went to port my numbers and couldn't. [Even though their website and their 1-800 number sales guys said I would be able to.] The reason. I used to live in Mid-MI and the numbers are Mt Pleasant MI numbers [I live in Lansing MI now]. Verizon wasn't the A or B system in Mt Pleasant so to this day they can not sell phones there. Somehow, since my numbers are from there, they were unable to port them. Which means??? I don't know. Can't wait to see what happens when they try to convert me in the next few months and run into the same problem. So, it looks like I just sit and wait and see where it goes. I refuse to give up my three numbers, been there done that, huge PITA.
The reason they can't do it now is they don't operate in the area your number is from. Once the conversion happens, unless that market is divested, they will officially operate in that area, so problem solved.
WOW... read this reply I got from them. Talk about not helping AT ALL. Dear Mr X, First and foremost, I would like to thank you for your interest in Verizon Wireless as your wireless provider. My name is Charisse and it will be my pleasure to check your ability to port your numbers over to Verizon Wireless. After further researching the issue at hand, I see that your mobile numbers cannot be ported to Verizon Wireless at a Verizon Wireless store. Your mobile numbers may or may not be able to port to Verizon Wireless, please give our Telesales team a call at 800-793-8211 for more information. They will be able to address all of your questions and concerns. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We appreciate your interest in Verizon Wireless products and services. Should you have additional questions or concerns, please reply to this e-mail. Sincerely, Charisse Verizon Wireless Customer Service
UPDATE - I always get different answers, but this time they claim they can port it and have phones coming my way overnighted. I always get three different answers as to why... but I'll be curoius to see if it works tomorrow.
Well number portability is usually possible regardless of where your number came from. As long as it's an active number it should work…So It's the carrier's fault if it won't work. For example, In some cases, only out-of-area numbers will not be ported, such as if you move from Michigan to Florida, and want to change providers. Alltel for example will only port a number that is local to your billing address.
Things are complicated with Alltel right now. Any number that is slated to be divested VZW can not legally touch due to antitrust reasons. They have to be very careful how they speak to any Alltel customer right now because they can get in a lot of trouble for trying to sell to the wrong person.
