If your phone has 1x capabilities, you can use the faster service for MOU. It may or may not require additional/different configuration. I know the authentication is different.

I think I've read that the ST7868W has 1x capabilities, but I don't know how to set it up or set up the laptop modem for it to work. I'm hoping someone on the forum can help.

    Thank you.

I had a ST7868W for many years and as far as I know it does not have 1X capability - just the older 9600 baud speed you get on the qnc system.

BTW - when using the cell phone, there is no modem in your laptop. The laptop connectes via a serial connection, either RS-232 or perhaps USB if they ever made a USB cable for the 7868W. The phone then responds to standard modem AT commends but the modem itself is at the other end of the wireless provider's digital connection, where the signal is connected to the land line system.

I hope somebody can help me get set up to use Nokia 6256i or Motorola E815 as a modem to connect PC to internet. I read through this thread and it appears that the 6256i can do it. I have th DKU-2 cable and have installed the PC suit 6.7. When I tried to connect to internet, no modem was in the list. When I first hooked up the phone with the cable, it appeared to install drivers but still nothing in list. I tried uninstalling and now the when I try plugging in the phone it says that it cannot install drivers.

I use my 6265i with the DKU-2 cable as a modem for my ThinkPad X21 laptop operating under Win98SE. It worked the first time and continues to work well. I don't know what operating system you have, but I did NOT install Nokia's PC suite since Nokia says you need Win 2000 or later. I unstalled only the cable drivers from the Nokia Web site and that software had the modem drivers. I later tired to install PC Suite on a Windoes 2000 machine to use with a Bluetooth connection to the 6265i and had all sorts of problems, including the modem driver issue you are seening.

I don't know exactly what to tell you, but please post the OS you are using. Also, do you see ANY modem drivers? I used one of the Generic Nokia drivers with PC Suite until I just removed the whole thing aand now use only the Bluetooth software on the Win 2000 machine.

I am using XP home SP2. I was able to get it to work. I had made a stupid mistake on the phone number using mine when the phone I am using is my wife's. When I fixed that, it work fine. I am using it now while traveling. Thanks.

This thread is a little bit old, but I'm having the same symptoms as vroberts. I'm using a Palm T5 to connect to a Samsung SCH-A870 via bluetooth on Verizon. I can get qnc access, but get Authentication Failures when trying for 1x access.

Does anyone know if there is a different init string for Samsung phones that might work for me. I tried the one that helped vroberts, but no joy.

    Thanks,

    Bill

Bill, see msg #24 in this thread. That message is from Andy84094 and he indicates he found the init string for my Nokia phone at howardforums.com, but the site is not responding right now.

That was for qnc. If you read further you will see I got 73K when operating at 1x.
