No, I'm sure they'll keep the interface. And then people like me who hate it won't be able to flash to the much better Alltel interface. Lame.

Cingular is constantly looking like a better option, though....

Until Reuters reports it, I would just ignore this.

First, we don't know if VZW is going to buy Alltel.

If VZW does buyout Alltel. If you need to reflash a phone after the merger more than likely you would probably get either VZW UI or manufactures UI.

VZW will not be asking all former Alltel customers to come in and get the VZW UI. VZW will more than likely be asking former Alltel customers to come in and get a new phone with the VZW logo and UI on it.

Remember the VZW UI is designed for the average joe who does not want things changed on this phone and wants it very simple and easy to use.

Most people here at the WA, when they buy a new phone want to play around and learn something new.

VZW UI is slowly making improvements
VZW does listen to customers when they leave and slowly make changes.
Phones are not as lame today. OBEX on some 2007 phones are not 100% restricted like it was in the past.

The point is this, Alltel is going to have a hard time to survive being a provider like it is right now (covering all outside, but not inside a metro market). It needs to be a national provider or it is going to be eat by one.
I would say the probability that we hear of someone buying Alltel this year is very likely. It could be an equity firm that keeps it name. The firm will have to have access to a ton of capital to invests in the company so they can build into many metro markets from the 700 MHz auction.
International Providers like Vodafone, or maybe NTT might want to buy Alltel.

So there are some choices out there besides VZW or even the other 3 national providers.

I would not put anything past the fcc. They would not be talking if they didnt think it would work.

I hope ALLTEL does not get bought up, and if it does, I hope it won't be a GSM carrier, because that would mean a lot of our CDMA advantage is gone!

I think ever if it was a GSM carrier, they would still maintain a dual network, because alltel does alot of gsm roaming. Its to there advantage to support both. Why cant we just all use UMTS, already..

you would only get a $500 deposit charge if your credit was bad......

does ALLTEL have a GSM network that other carriers roam on and if so does ALLTEL support this network for their own customers?

In some areas, ALLTEL does have a GSM network, maintained for roamers only. Their own customers use their CDMA/AMPS network only, which is far better than the GSM roamer network ALLTEL maintains in some areas.

so why did ALLTEL make a GSM network in the first place if they were only using it for roamers from other companies???

ROAMING REVENUE. They have GSM up in places other GSM carriers are dead, so they are forced to roam on ALLTEL.

God no...anyone but Verizon! I have a feeling it will be Sprint. Many people are scared by that, but hey, for us in heritage markets it does not matter. It just means a good network(Alltel's) and a larger calling community.

If anyone brought out Alltel, I'd be unhappy and happy at the same time.

In the Upstate of South Carolina, VZW has more coverage than sprint in general.

The nearest Sprint & Alltel towers are 3 miles away from my home, a VZW tower is one mile away, but the sprint reception needs improvement, seriously, you need to be within a mile of I-85 to get a decent Sprint signal. Alltel & Verizon dominate the area.

As long as i can still have the cool 3 Alltel features (MyCircle, change plans whenever, large CDMA network), i'm happy. just don't jack up the price or alter the service quality.

I have an Alltel phone, and I am trying to force roam on Sprint and it keeps saying that "the authentication code cannot be verified."

I can use Alltel & Verizon just fine.

    whats going on

If ALLTEL is bought out by one of the other carriers, there will no longer be MyCircle or Anytime Plan changes- you will get what the new (more expensive) carrier has to offer!

We can't access the local Sprint SID here(4386) This is one of the few areas where Alltel has the sid "neg'd." But who cares, between Alltel and Verizon, the area is covered great!

mmmm, I don't think you were on Sprint. dialing *228 doesn't count. I was on verizon sid 139 today, no problem. My wife's phone is always on Vzw sid 139...works no problem. Are you using your nam settings? That's where you have to do it.

My sister in law lives in Williamsburg VA and just dumped Alltel for Verizon, she said Alltel had not improved and they couldn't use their phones in a lot of the stores ect... down there.
My Nephew had Sprint in Williamsburg and didn't like them either, he went with Verizon as well.
