For the most part, reviews for the Incredible are positive. One of the better reviewed smartphones for Verizon. So far, so good. Review: HTC Droid Incredible : Is It Your Type? (Phone Scoop) "The Incredible is incredible. Despite its few weaknesses, the Incredible outmatches every other handset that Verizon Wireless currently offers." HTC Droid Incredible Review (Phone Arena Reviews) "There were many incredible aspects that we were able to experience with the device that ultimately shows HTC's continuation in being a leader in the Android world. With two similar handsets already out on the market, the Nexus One and Desire, the Droid Incredible manages to follow suit more with the latter of the two. Unfortunately, the minimalistic design approach is the one glaringly eye sore that hinders the Droid Incredible to be elevated to a level beyond its brothers, and with the HTC EVO 4G on the horizon, it'll have a small window of opportunity to make its impact. Verizon customers are once again being treated to the best Android phone to hit the US market – easily supplanting itself as the premier offering on their lineup; even when the Nexus One finally arrives on the scene. In the end, Verizon and HTC will clearly make out well on both ends as they both become the driving forces for Android's ubiquitous appeal." HTC Droid Incredible (Verizon Wireless) Smartphone reviews - CNET Reviews "With its polished design and user interface and blazing fast speeds, the HTC Droid Incredible takes pole position as Verizon's top smartphone and is now the Android device to beat." HTC's DROID Incredible for Verizon review (Mobile Burn) "The HTC DROID Incredible offers a host of features inside a very capable smartphone, and nearly all of them work very well. Its 8 megapixel camera took some excellent shots, call quality on Verizon's network was very good, and web browsing was a pleasure. If there's one thing about the phone I'd fix, it's the battery life. The Android market still needs better apps, especially games, but that's not anything I'd blame on the DROID Incredible. For the reasons above, and more, I highly suggest you check out the HTC DROID Incredible and give it a "Highly Recommended" rating." HTC Droid Incredible Review: More Like Impressive - Htc droid incredible review - Gizmodo "The calculus is relatively simple: If you're on Verizon and want a smartphone (and aren't stuck with BlackBerrys), the Incredible is pretty much the one you should buy. With Palm's future unclear, and its app ecosystem shaky, it's hard to recommend the Pre, even though its software is generally more usable than Android. And the Droid's single redeeming feature over this, a physical keyboard, is actually less usable than the custom keyboard HTC's put on the Incredible. The Nexus One for Verizon looms, but the only reasons it could be considered superior—it feels better built and more expensive, and the promise of timely updates from Google—are mitigated by the fact the Incredible is here now, and HTC's Sense does glossy up some of Android's rough spots."
Here's another take, from Engadget: Droid Incredible review -- Engadget "Let's just put this out there: the Droid Incredible is the best Android device that you can purchase in America right now. It's better than the Droid, better than the Nexus One, and certainly beats the pants off of any previous generation handsets like the Eris, myTouch, or Cliq. It's not just a very, very good Android phone (though it is); it's also an excellent smartphone no matter how you cut it. If you're on Verizon right now, you're finally getting really great options for phones, but the Incredible is currently sitting at the top of that heap with a good bit of distance to the next in line. Sure, there are still issues like a lack of quality titles in the Android Market, and if a hardware keyboard is a must, this won't do the job for you. Also, while Sense is truly great on this phone, there may be users who prefer a more streamlined, stripped down experience. Still, if you're looking for an ultra-fast, extremely capable smartphone that has the guts and gleam to go the distance, the Incredible just might be the Droid you're looking for. Yes, we made that joke."
I can say that the incredible is a pretty sweet device. One of my best friends got it when it was released and he couldn't be happier. My cousin and a coworker have the Droid and they're also satisfied.
Wondering how much of the VZW software experience is enforced in the Droid OS. Hopefully zero. I really dislike the VZW OS and it's implementation of BREW, mostly because of the VZW exclusiveness that is enforced by them using BREW over Java: I dislike being locked into selecting from only VZW apps. The "VZW Apps" store is also irritating to me, since it seems everything is just graphically overblown "VZW exclusives" which ultimately don't meet my needs. I REALLY want apps which aren't 20% solutions that are only available on VZW phones (because they are BREW based). With that in mind, I hear that the Droid apps marketplace is independent of VZW, so if that is true (and if it also looks to remain permanently true), I'm interested to learn more about the Incredible, with a few more concerns that my expending more research should cover.
There is no Verizon software anywhere on the Incredible. It is an Android OS phone. So no interference from Big Red. Smartphones rarely, if at all, have any VZW OS-related stuff on them at all. Only their enhanced and regular phones have their proprietary OS on them.
2 weeks ago, I looked at the only 3 Android based phones at the VZW store in Rochester, NH, and I definitely recall seeing "My Verizon" on at least one of them but I have no idea if it was the Incredible I saw it on. I suppose that some customers actually like that service. Hopefully, it can be removed from any Android device. Can't say I'm surprised there was an icon for the VZW stuff, after all, it makes a decent amount of money for VZW. FWIW, the Motorola Droid phone over there was having a REALLY bad day, it needed something like 10 seconds to BEGIN to respond when I tapped an icon (then add another 5 to 20 seconds for the slow-motion launching to completely load). Unacceptably slow to respond. A reboot took well over 60 seconds just to reach shutdown! That leaves me feeling like Motorola is not going to have a decent offering for this Android OS. I can't say I'm too impressed by phones that are slow to respond to my commands, that is a second big reason why I want to get rid of the enV Touch I have. Press and then wait and wonder if I missed the icon, then press again, but suddenly the first attempt starts working. Or no response, I only jiggled the icon location. Thanks, Mobile Mike, I sure hope those reviews you posted are accurate. I'll have to plan on visiting the Concord NH store and playing with the HTC incredible in a very deliberate manner.
Since the Droid X has just been released, it's as good, if not better than the Incredible, and a far-cry better than the original Droid, of which I'm not a fan of. Check out PhoneArena's comparisons of the Droid X versus the iPhone 4, EVO 4G, and the Incredible. Cell phone reviews, news and specs - Phone Arena
My Verizon is an App - it allows you to see your up to date (within the last day) usage, pay your bill, view your plan, and other VZW services - most of the things that you can do on the VZW website. It is not an OS and it is not something you purchase. You don't even have to install it. I think it's a great alternative. They just released an update last week. It has more accessible usage data than the previous version. Very nice.
Well, as long as Droid users (me) can get the Android OS directly from Google and not be forced to get the phone OS only from VZW, then yeah, I'd be interested and I would simply ignore that "My Verizon" stuff. Has anyone updated their Droid phone OS without going to Verizon to get the update?
You don't get updates from Verizon. Once they and Google OK the release of an update, Google sends it out. The Droid phones update automatically, unless you change the setting. There is no Verizon OS or anything like it on the phone. There are some Verizon-related apps, but that's it. These Android phones on Verizon do not operate like the Verizon OS regular and enhanced phones. Different worlds entirely.
if you dislike Verizon so much that you won't even use an app on your VZW phone to check your plan/data/minutes or pay your bill, may I ask why you stay with them? Sprint, T-Mo, AT&T - they all have Androids - and they're on par with VZW Android offerings.
This would need a 2 hour composition to explain, so I spare some of the gory details. I'll say I have GOOD reason to want to leave. I'm NOT here for the VZW software, and for the future, I will only stay on VZW for a Droid phone that is open and also wicked fast. Otherwise, I'll go to AT&T for an iPhone 3g. My wife will come with me, for the same reason. I want multiple choices of similar applications, and we want applications which make sense. Setting a calendar reminder in a VZW phone isn't very flexible, VZW contacts being restored to my phone do NOT have all the data which I originally stored, VZW games should not be a 3 act multimedia stage show every time I launch it, VZW calendar alerts must select from 6 or 7 fixed time spans when I ACTUALLY do know how to type the exact hour minute and date for when the alert should be spawned, just too many little VZW annoyances and many big VZW issues not presented. Trust me. Sprint and T Mobile have very, very poor coverage up here. T-Mobile and USC have had major difficulties in the customer service department for some members of my VZW plan. Unicel and Alltel are now part of VZW, so I expect the phone software soon will change. Not a lot of options.
