Hey, is there anyway to get free internet from the wireless internet around my school? I'm at college and i was wondering if i could get my phone to use the wireless internet at school on the phone, and not have to pay for it through verizon.

There isnt any way to do this WITHOUT using minutes.

    1) Normally, when you press the UP arrow, it will connect to Verizon's net service. But if you dont wanna pay for it (i dont blame u), we can change the settings and you can use the net for free (it would only use minutes). It is very tough however browsing the net on the RAZR as its web browser isnt very good. If you want to do that, follow THESE directions.

    2) Do you have a laptop? If so, you can follow THIS guide to using your phone as a modem and connecting your laptop to it. This is MUCH easier as you are just using your laptop to browse like normal. Again, this DOES use minutes, just like if it was a voice call.

But as for just hoppping onto the schools network, you would need a laptop for this with a wireless networking card in it and it wouldnt require your phone.

    Cincyball,

I followed the guide from "Hacktherazr" and everything seemed to go just fine. I tried to dial up and it comes back "No Answer, redial in 60 seconds" I can watch the phone and it says dialing and will sometimes connect, then disconnect. Where I am testing it has very little signal, "enough to make a voice call" Does the connection need a stong signal? or have I overlooked something.

This sounds familiar. I think u overlooked something. What free net are u doing? The DUN where u use the phone as the modem? Or are u doing the google proxy for free using ur phones web browser?

Off the bat, it appears u are doing DUN. Have u disabled EVDO? Send me the link to the guide u are using from hacktherazr

EVDO is disabled, I checked it twice. I also checked the SEEM edit just to make sure. If I dial #777 by hand it tells me my phone is not authorized for service at this time, but if I dial another number it goes through just fine. Like I said I am in a fringe area right now, voice calls ok.

Digging a little deeper I discovered that my W2k network connection for Verizon DUN did not have "QoS Packet Scheduler" loaded. This is a work PC and we use Novell Client to log onto our Network. I disabled Novell Client for this connection and installed QoS Packet Scheduler and "BADA-BOOM BADA-BING" It is a wonderful thing! :D

First of all I want to thank you again Cincyball for all your assistance. :D

Second just to review, using DUN and tethering to Verizon only uses your minutes (during peak hours) and there is no "Data Line" charges?

Also I have seen mention of the *228 feature to NOT use it, does this apply to ALL Phones that have been Modded (SEEM Edits) or just to the ones that have been flashed to Alltel?

Yes, using DUN is treated as a voice call only. No data charges. Just to verify, you NEED evdo off to use DUN, but u can leave evdo on if u are using the free wap on the phone's browser. Read this thread for what to watch for to make sure your not set up on the 'pay-as-you-go-kb' data plan -> http://forums.wirelessadvisor.com/razr-phones/58876-billed-kb-usage-using-google-proxy.html

Yes, the *228 update problems are only on the Alltel flash. So if u have not flashed, you are okay to perform this update.

i dont know the technical lingo for it, but basically the phones browser isnt set up for that. im not sure if it has anything to do with not being able to receive cookies or what. But the way we have it set up with google is really restricting. I always have my laptop with me, so im able to just use DUN and access the net from my laptop and use the normal IE.

there are other ways to setup free internet on the phone, but they require hottproxy or similar. they are more difficult, but I believe it would solve ur problem. the site i mreferring to has been up and down lately, but its www.motov3m.com Look for Free WAP methods 1 & 3. You are currently using method 2.

Sorry I couldnt narrow it down for ya, maybe someone else knows how around here.

Had am interesting thing happen with my RAZR, I did the SEEM edit to keep my V3m from going into EVDO, but I had to go to Minneapols, Minn and instead of seeing 1X when I got off the plane I see EV. Does that mean that the phone is still going into the EVDO mode?

I was unaware of the seem edit for EVDO. Usually u set it by typing #073887* then going into test mode, etc. What seem edit did you do? Also, if you perform a *228, it will reset your evdo. Are u sure u didnt do a *228 to update your PRL while traveling?

Your right, it was the #073887 that I did to disable EVDO, and yes I did a *228 after that. I will take care of that when I return home. I am not using it right now to access the internet so it is not an issue.
Thanks for jogging my feeble brain back to reality!
