I read all the postings about creating gcd files and got the content error. In the previous postings it said to change your web server settings, but my page is a free one off of angelfire. Does anyone know away around this or how to get it to work. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
You have to tell the web server how to transmit files with the GCD extension. This is called a MIME type, and must be "text/x-pcs-gcd" for GCD files. Most free web hosting sites (and those included with dial-up service) do not support the GCD MIME type. The best you can hope for, is to conact the owners of the web server and ask them to create the MIME types on their servers. Don't be suprised, however, if they won't -- it is free after all. The alternative is to use a free upload service. You upload your files to a web site that DOES have support for GCD files. Then you visit the site using your phone and download it. Some sites you might try are PCSpix.com, MyPhoneFiles.com, SprintUsers.com, t1mmy.net, MatrixM.com, etc., etc. A final alternative (more expensive), is to buy FutureDial's SnapMedia software (aka Sprint's PCS Multimedia Master Software) and a data cable. But it doesn't support QCP files, just MIDI ringers and images.
I was able to upload my own personal photos by resizing them to 119x119, saving as jpg, and using the T1mmy VisionTool to upload the pic to my phone. I'm not sure what the exact supported dimensions are for pics on the 4900... I used 119x119 because that's the size all of the wireless phone screensavers were on some website I was looking at. On the 4900, it seems to cut a little off the top and bottom of the picture, probably because it doesn't use the full screen to display the graphic. Hope this helps. Rob
You can manually get the server to recognize the GCD file extension by using an htaccess file. I don't remember how I got it to work, as it's been a while, but I found the info on the net. I'll try to find it again and post it here.
Ronx, The 4900 uses an image size of 120x96. But be aware that when used for caller identification, the bottom portion will be overlayed by the caller's phone number. Therefore, the "usable" horizontal area is only about 80 pixels tall. Also, when the image is not a photo, I use the PNG format in order to reduce the file size (and memory consumption). GilliganLQ, The htaccess is used by Apache web servers. If you're using IIS, you use the GUI ("Internet Information Services" on the "Administrative Tools" Start Menu) and it is under the web site's properties, HTTP Headers tab, MIME Map section.
Lucky shot on the htaccess thing, I guess. I don't really know much about servers and the such, I just found that htaccess tip, tried it, and it worked. Oh well.
